Blackhawk Sportster Composite Holster for 1911

I bought one of these at the local shop for 29 bucks.  This is my first of this type.  Bottom line, it seems to be very nice.  It took about 300 cycles to begin releasing the pistol smoothly (part my technique and part break in), but it works pretty well.  I'm going to use it for a little casual plate competition, which is also new to me, but I think that it is going to work.

A little dry teflon spray lube seems to help.

If you have experience with these, I have two questions:

1.  How does this holster compare to others regarding finish wear?
2.  Are they safe to use cocked and locked?

The 1911 and 1911A1 are perfectly safe to carry cocked, locked and loaded with a round in the chamber.

I'm not so sure about that holster though.................

Well,  First, that holster is going to be HARD on the finish of your gun, and it won't look like good ol holster wear patina......It'll be much rougher than  that.

Second, I think the safety factor has more to do with your 1911 than the holster, but if that hoslter has a retention lock that interfaces with the trigger guard, I'd rethink the C/L/L carry condition..........I'm all for speed and security, but not at the expense of shooting myself in the leg.

I guess you can tell, I don't like them.......I use leather.......

The retention lock locates on the front of the trigger guard. I have a Sportster for 1911s and Glocks. They are as safe as any other. The 1911 is much safer to carry "Cocked and Locked" than  the safetyless striker fired pistols. I probably own 18-20 kydex holsters and about half as many leather ones. Extreme finish wear has never been a problem with either. For field conditions the kydex/plastic models are probably superior. The do not absorb moisture or collect embedded grit to wear the gun finish. The choice between leather and plastic is more a matter of preference than anything. About 70% of the time I'll be carrying plastic.

I have several Blackhawk holsters with the Serpa retention device, and have used them in IPSC matches with no problems whatsoever. (1911's and XD's) I also have not noticed any significant holster wear on the guns after several hundred presentations. You're good to go. :)
