I did that for years.  Never had to use it, but felt secure in the knowledge that a .44 round ball was just as capable of penetrating human-hide nowadays as it was in the 1860's.  Think of the damage possibilities--a soft lead ball that flattens as it hits and shatters bone; the grease used to lube the charge, together with black powder crud to cause infection; and if the assailant was close enough, the flame jumping out of the end of the barrel would burn him!  Seems pretty effective to me--just make the first shot a good one.

If you can use a flamethrower for self-defense, then you can definitly use a blackpowder 44. ;D

Jamal - you live in Florida as do I.  I kept a 44 cal BP revolver in my nightstand for three years and felt very confidant with it.  I used to shoot Cowboy Action during that time and was comfortable with this revolver.  one thing I did do was practice with it every week and clean it afterwards.   This way I always had fresh powder in the cylinders.   I never had any misfires from the previous weeks loads.  I did have one that I kept in the safe for two years and when I went to fire it I got misfires on 4 of the 5 chambers......humidity of Florida!

Wild Bill Hickock used a pair of BP Colts with deadly accuracy during his time.  He fired them and cleaned them every day to practice and keep the powder fresh.

I don't keep these any more because there are more reliable systems available that will do more damage.
I'm just tryin' to keep everything in balance, Woodrow. You do more work than you got to, so it's my obligation to do less. (Gus McCrae)

I think that the load deteriorating is the main concern.
Other than that concern, I wouldn't have a concern.

Wild Bill Hitchcock would reload his colt 36 revolvers every morning.  He was worried about moisture getting into his cylinder over the night and fouling his powder.
Depending on the model of revolver (both my Colt 1860 and the Remington 58 have them)there are notches inbetween the nipples for the hammer to rest and it can be stored with all 6 loaded.  You may want to load the gun on a bright sunny day and stick it in a Zip loc bag and then in the night stand.  Remember Wild Bill.  He was in the dry west and you live in a rain forrest where 90% humidty is the norm.
Do you know how to unload a revolver so you can them take it to the range with out getting into the car with a fully loaded handgun?

Who was it who used their blackpowder revolver to defend his home from unannounced visitors?  I want to  say Jason Ballou, only problem was the visitors were a drug task force used a search warrent at the wrong address.
result Jason shot in the head after his wife , who was nude when door was kicked in, screamed and he picked up a muzzle loading revolver and stepped out into his living room.
Sorry if  I went into old history.  Black powder works just fine,  just beware of cops with search warrents.

My stock broker has a term - "keep your poowder dry".  What he means is hold on to some cash, don't risk it all.  I think the phrase could also apply to a BP revolver.  Keep your powder dry.  Don't think I would want to trust my life to a BP ignition pistol.  To each his own, but a BP pistol hardly qualifies as a life or death device.  It is best for recreational uses and reinactments, etc.  Hell, get a boom-a-rang.

i have hear that about Florida , but there both a list for people that have CWP and guns and it used to be public up to 06 i think. I know this because fox 13 news had a story about why is not this " valuable info" public any more ::)

and as for cops, i make d!m well sure of who or what it is before i pull any weapon. I use my surefire light to first see what it is because i have had the " your not the person were looking for" thing happen. maybe one day it will not work but up to this point the blinding power of my surefire has save me from shoot may things(like someone cat when camping and a pet golden reviver)

i  am  a gun dealer  in  Florida  for  28  years

i  have  never given any  of my customers  info  to law  enforcement
with  regards to  the weapon  just a back ground check  [and  one  weopon trace]
this  info  is supposed to be destroyed  [beleive  it  if  you like]

read statute 790 of the Florida statute
separate fact  from fiction

take a concealed  carry class  they  will  give  you a book  [maybe]

i  think you should  just  do  it  and  sue them  for  discrimination  if they kick   you  out
the  2ND amendment  is pretty  clear
i  think  these  rules  are  a bluff  just to  make  you keep a low profile

you  don't  need  to live in a place  like  that  any  way
it  is not good  to surround  yourself with  the entitlement mentality   that  thrives  in  those places
they  have those  rules  because it  is inhabited by people that can't earn a living
[i know some  have legitimate  reasons for beeing there but  mostly  i think  you will  agree]

Why would you want to use a BP revolver over a modern handgun? Do you have a felony conviction and cannot legally possess a modern gun?

If you're worried about regulations (and not laws) where you live, it won't make a difference if you're caught with one or the other, will it?

if  one   of your crack head  neighbors  break  in  and steal  your muzzle loader  revolver
they  will  go  CRAZY  trying  to find  your bullets
giving the police  time  to capture  them

better  yet   leave  out some  real  bullets  and hide a camera

the only reason I would see not to use one is that you will
not be able to apply a quick follow up shot due to obscuring
you target with smoke. power is perfectly adequate, accuracy
is reasonable. Properly loaded they go bang every time.
A sheriff's model in 44 caliber is still a formidable weapon,
and dang if I would try to rob someone armed with one.
I sure would not feel helpless if armed with one either.
Not the best choice for defence, but by no means a bad choice
in my opinion.

I can think of at least two reasons.  First, if he is at least eighteen years old, but not yet twenty-one years old, he can legally own a BP revolver, but not a modern handgun.  Secondly, if he already owns a BP revolver, but doesn't own a modern handgun.  Two very good reasons right there.
