To me the 2-7 or at most 3-9 is the ideal scope for any such rifle. Were it say a .358 Winchester then even a lower power variable like a 1.5-6 or so seems warranted. When I see monster scopes with hubble telescope size objectives I automatically place the person in the category of beginner who really hasn't learned what a proper hunting rifle is about. It matters not if a person has one year of experience or one year of experience twenty times it still amounts to a lack of experience in my mind.

I put a Leupold Vari-X IIc 2-7x33mm on my BLR when I bought it in the early 90's.

Caliber :

308

As for the higher power scopes,  they are good for people that have bad eyesight and/or want to see the  target up REAL  CLOSE !  ;D ;D

You location & hunting style would be factors also. I'd be in the 2-7,2.5-8, or 1.75-6 range.

I like the scopes that don't have a bell on the front of them for my levers.  I've got a Nikon 1.75-5.5 on my 7mm-08 BLR, going to take that one off and replace it with a VX-III 1.5-5.  Have several K-2.5's mounted on shorter range levers.  DP

Good point about the scope size. I have a BLR in 223 that wears a scope that just don't look right on the rifle... but that combo sure works well for me.

quickdtoo:  That 2-7x28mm you're using makes me think of trying an excess VX-I 2-7x28mm Leupold rimfire on my BLR.  Leupold say the scope has "Incredible ruggedness – tested to the same standards as all Golden Ring riflescopes."  So I figure it will work fine.

The only issue I see with the rimfire scope is parallax free setting is likely 50yds for rimfire instead of 100yds or 150yds for BG scopes, but since you already own it..... ;)

The 2X7 Leupold is my all time favorite scope!! I have quite a few of them, they are what I consider perfect for what I do and how I hunt.

I bought a BLR 358Win many moons ago and with it I bought a M8 3X Leupold. That rifle served me faithfully for many years. Never wanting for more power or magnification. I have owned that 3X for 33years now, it still works perfectly. Currently is sitting right here by the puter waiting for a responce from Leupold so I can return it for a reticule change. Yup.. its getting a German #1 reticule. Then its going on my current favorite rifle... a 357Maxi Handi!!

I vote for a 2X7 Leupold.

I'd worry more about parallax putting a scope set at 150 yards on a .22.  Deer are much bigger than squirrels.  But, I understand there will be some chance of parallax error.

EXACTLY!The paralax being set at a closer range is in no way a determent.

Most shotgun scopes are set @ 75 yards while most 22/rimfire scopes are set at 50 yards. Regular big game scopes paralax setting will vari by manufacturer, but generally will be 100 or 150 as Tim already mentioned. Paralax problems occur when a scope is used at shorter ranges, not longer ones. Shots out beyond the paralax setting will not be an issue.

We are talking about lo power fixed and lower end variables. Generally these scopes will not be found on extream long range rifles.

Skunk, I just got one of those for my new Ruger Hawkeye.  Cabela's selling them at $75 off and free shipping was too irresistable.

I haven't shot with it yet.  I have it mounted loosely on the rifle.  Waiting for a sunny, not so cold day.  Looks bright to me, but it's the most expensive scope I ever owned.  Before the best scopes I've bought were Leupold VX-I's.  In fact, the VX-I I bought for the Hawkeye had U and D reversed.  So I sent it back to Cabela's for a refund, then I noticed the VX-III sale.

P15,

Of course, I can't speak for you, but I have a feeling you're going to be really happy and very satisfied with that particular Leupold. And you got it just in time too. I've been reading that the VX-IIIs are going to be updated with some new features that will no doubt make them more expensive. Many folks have been asking what Leupold could possibly do to make the VX-III 2.5-8 x 36mm a better scope. I want one to replace the 3 X 9 Burris FFII on my 35 Whelen.

Skunk:  Cabela's is now selling the new VX-3, the replacement for the VX-II

That's really weird. Leupold doesn't even have the new VX-3 listed on their website yet (I sure can't find them anyway). Isn't the VX-3 going to replace the VX-III? The price on the new VX-3 is not totally unreasonable.

Yeah I miss typed VX-II.  Left out an I.  Corrected now to VX-III.  Looks like they added scratch coating and argon/krypton, and eliminated gloss finish.  Probably other changes too.  I wonder when they'll update VX-II's?  Might be a good sale then too.  The VX-III I bought is sold out, but it was sold out a few days ago, then they got more.  They've raised the price of some VX-I's and Rimfires $10 to $20.

Midsouth is great, but I live in Tennessee.  We have over 9% in state and local sales taxes.  So Midsouth is great for people in the other 49 states.  I understand all companies may soon have to charge everyone sales tax, if Congress overturns a 1992 court decision.

Mounted a 4X Leupold on my .308 BLR in 1974 and quit worrying about such things.  Have never wanted for more scope.
