Sold our Rats
« on: January 08, 2009, 03:53:37 AM »
The boy and I took our rats to a local buyer the other day, it was not a big load. Because it was only 67 rats, we pretty much decide what we get is what we get. Not going to walk if we think the money is not enough.
I told the boy we'd get the 3 pile deal for sure maybe even 4 piles. We had some good large rats we had some real dinks.
Anyway when it was all said and done I was pleased. We ended up with the 3 pile deal and I was actually surprise because I expected 4 piles.
The large rats we got $4.00 the mediums and smalls $2.00 and the dinks .75. I personally thought there would be 4 piles and more rats in the dink pile.
So when it all shook out we had a $3.15 ave. Which was more than I expected for the lot.
We also sold 1 medium male mink for $10.00
The mink and rats were all early November and were all put up.
I think we were treated fairly.

 Mark,Im also had a $3.15 average on my rats.$15.00 on med.male mink.
Rats seem to have held up better than other fur.

$15 average on male meduinm mink, is the highest prices I've heard from anywhere, by a long shot this year-

those prices were quoted about Nov 1st around here- but are a dim memory with $10 avrages on everything being the norm

if that $15 average on Med males is current, please share...............

I sold a bunch of big males, and got a $12 average on them-add in $7 females and I got about a $10 average............

tats what I was quoted then as well- but the prices have really dropped lately in the country- and these auctions aren't helping any!

Sold right before Christmas- averaged a little under $10 for everything- 2/3s males-

I'd send the rest to auction- but no cheer there either

Took all my coon, couple skunks and couple beaver to the fur pick up truck this morning. So they are now headed to NAFA for the March sale I believe it is. Anyway I've seen a lot of gripping on another popular internet site about the last NAFA sale. Personally I haven't looked up the sale results yet myself. Apparently the other dozen or so guys at the truck this morning didn't see or hear the gripping either. I didn't hang around and talk to any of the guys, I have snow needs to be moved. But Lavern Schroeder who was driving the truck said that there were buyers at the last NAFA sale. They just didn't have any money to spend. So I guess we will all just have to wait and see what happens at the next sale. I guess if a person need the money right now and want their fur gone. It maybe best for them to find a country buyer and see how you come out with them.
Myself I have to say that with my coon I generally make out as good or better with NAFA than selling locally.

The money I got for my rats and the one mink was on 1/6/09. Like I said I think it was fair based on what I've been hearing.

the sales could have gone worse- rats, beaver, amrtin and fisher sold well at good levels- coyotes, coon and mink not so well- but what did sell- sold at decent enough prices-

nothing to write home about for sure...but could have been worse-

Steve
I know you've seen it too, auction sales don't go just like guys expect or they think it should. Maybe the auction house holds their fur for any number of reasons. Then the guys all start ripping on the auction house for not knowing their business. Blah blah Blah!
Selling fur even in the boom years was a gamble on any give day and depending on the buyer.
Back in the 70's when we had 3 local buyers here. My brother in-law and I walking out the door on one buyer when we knew he low balled us. I knew I did the right thing, as we went out the door the buyer said "Don't come back with that stuff when you can't sell it."
So we went straight across town to the other local buyer. I swear the first one must have called the other when we left.  Because dang if the second buyer was only one dollar more on the same lot. Disappointed we packed up the whole deal and walked again. We were kind of unsure just what to do at that point. We called a fellow trapper across the river in MN for ideas on other buyers and had he heard anything. He suggested if we could waiting a week that we buy a table at an up coming fur auction. So a week and a half later we drove 40 miles north, spent $10.00 for a table at the auction and waited. At the end of the day our assortment of fur had sold to 3 or 4 different buyers. Thing is we actually doubled the amount of money both the local buyers had offered for our fur. It was more than worth the time and drive and we were pleased to say the least.
But that kind of story don't happen often. Especially the way the market has been for sometime now.
We all just play what we are dealt and hope we make our best choice.
