Not sure what to think
« on: January 08, 2009, 07:54:10 AM »
I was out walking with my camera last Friday and bumped into an archery hunter. After shooting the breeze for some time he told me that if he doesn't drop his deer within his sight he stands a very poor chance of finding it because he is color blind and can't see red. He told me that since he can't track he has lost three "Good Buck" this year. One was a twelve point, and if it's the same one, it's one that I saw during the summer and have been hoping would spread his genes around a bit because he is just about perfect.  And to make me feel worse, the twelve he hit with what he is sure was a double-lunger was back in the first week of archery. So he shot it before the rut. (He hasn't seen it since) I know that if it was me in his place I'd have quit after double-lunging a huge twelve point and loosing it. I would have considered that my buck for the year, and thanked the hunting gods for the experience they gave me. Oh yea there's more. He buys a MD. license and hunts down there for his 6 allowed maryland deer. He hunts where I met him, (almost my backyard) for "HIS BIG ONE". Was I off base by wanting to punch him in the mouth before walking away?

I suppose he is within the law but it's certainly not right and in some states one hit and lost are "supposed" to be counted but if no one else is looking it's up to the person hunting and their ethics. Personally I think that if he can't blood trail period he needs to learn how or stop hunting as it's a rare deer shot with bow that falls in sight of the hunter at least in the woods I hunt. I recall a couple maybe more but the vast majority I had to blood trail. Hell most gun shot needed to be trailed.

There are products on the market to aid such folks and he should learn to use them. Even a bottle of peroxide with a sprayer on it will work as it foams on blood. He is clearly not an ethicial hunter regardless of one's definition of ethical.

Forget color blind even if I was blind in one eye and couldn't see out of the other if I even thought I had a marginal hit in a 12 point I would be on my hands and kneescrawling in circles to find it.  Heck i have spent two days walking grids to find a doe.(Did find her meat no good, but drug to the farmers dump pit for expired livestock and mailed in the report card)  I have kept hunting after losing a couple deer in rifle when they crossed property lines, but only when I know they were finished by other hunters.  Glad it was you and not me talking to him.

Tomorrow is the last day, I'm sure he'll be there, maybe I'll take a walk with my camera again. I'll check in on him and see how he's doing. Maybe I'll be considerate and stroll past his stand about every half hour and see if he might need some help tracking or something.

No walk by every half hour and ask if he has shot.  if he says yes watch for him to leave then go find the deer yourself.  he doesn't deserve a deer in the pot.  let him freeze on stand so that you can enjoy the stew.

He's not a hunter, he's a killer ! Couldn't he find a buddy or family member to help him
track his deer ? He lost a 12 pointer and is still hunting ? like graybeard said ,peroxide in a spray bottle will foam like crazy if it is sprayed on blood. What a freekin loser. JMO

Call a game warden ,he is in violation of the wildlife codes
Recovering Dead or Injured Wildlife: It is unlawful for a hunter to
refuse or neglect to make a reasonable effort to retrieve any killed or
injured game or wildlife.

I know I'm late on commenting on this one......but I know some color blind people.....but I don't know anyone who can't pick up and follow a blood trail. If the blood isn't red....then what color is it? I mean....when I follow a blood trail, sometimes in the fall, I'm following it among the fallen leaves and there is plenty of RED in there that I have to distinguish between leaf red and blood red.

I think that color blind line is a bunch of B-S. And maybe the double lung 12 point is about as truthful as the color blind line. I tell ya, when I double lung a buck, the most it's ever traveled was 60 yards.....and that was on a full out run on flat ground.

I'd say something stinks....and it's not the carcass of any dead deer.

Howdy Dave my name is Scott! Now you've met 1. I cant see blood or follow a blood trail. That being said I can and do track very well. When my family can't find a blood trail I usually get a call for help finding the game. It sounds to me like a guy who has no respect for the animal he hunts. Its not usually that hard to work out the trail of a wounded animal. He has no business in the woods if he won't make the effort to learn the skills necessary to recover his prey. You don't have to be able to see blood to track game. Sorry Dave but I couldn't help the smart aliccy remark at the start. No offense it's hard to explain being color blind to someone that's not. If you've ever taken the color test with the cards that have numbers hidden in the colored dots imagine not being able to see the numbers because you can't see the difference in the colors

Squirrelluck,

No apology from you is necessary. You see, I suffer from MS. I no longer even try to "educate" people about the effects of this disease on me. Like your color blindness, if you don't have it, you just wouldn't understand.

However, I commend you for overcoming your issue of colorblindness. You see, you have found a way to rise above it. You know that you can track a wounded animal...or find help in doing it.  The "other guy" is just plain lazy and uses his disability as a poor excuse.
