Where is all the Biker trash
« on: January 08, 2009, 01:43:02 PM »
It's to cold to ride, to late in the season to hunt much and the sun goes down at  5:30. Why ain't we talking it up?
Deer hunting is mostly fun then you shoot one and it turns to work.

Glad you posted!  You are absolutely right... if the forum isn't used it may be closed down.  I've got plenty of things to type about and should start some threads.  I should be spanked!   ;D

I will finish deer hunting tomarrow and start pig hunting soon. Will be looking for yotes any chance I get. I will start riding and paper punching when it gets to 60 or so. I will start fishing around the end of march. I have a new pup to train also. I will be looking for a new solo ride after I pay taxes I hope. Maybe I will get a new Harley when the big O starts to redistribute the wealth. I really don't know why I am on here I should be napping.

I wanna new scoot also, I'll start a new thread when I get back next Wednesday.

"why aint we talkin' it up"?    Good question D&H - I check in here a couple times a day and there hasn't been much happening. Holidays are behind us and a long haul ahead between now and spring. Back to work - always something to look forward to, what with the big chunks of salt slush falling off the trucks when you'r under them on a creeper. All part of the job, and thankfull that I have one. At a standstill on the Springer - waiting for new connector pins for the switch harnesses. Didn't like the looks of the old ones, and on the pre '95s you need to stay after them. Sent some parts for the 'King off for chrome too. Never seem to order all the parts at once - always find something else we need once we're into it. Got to get it right - (ex OL used to tell me I'm "Obsessive / Compulsive"?...That one was too smart for me). My buddy who has the bike shop, is up to his a$$ in work, and can't find the time to do his own stuff. Nobody seems to be tightening the belt when it comes to their bikes.
Big bike show this weekend up at Sandwich "Timber Creek Inn" - Maybe go up on Sunday.. or maybe stay home and cook and drink.... and eat and drink. Thinking chili and scratch built corn bread in a cast iron skillet, and hot peppers that we canned last summer. And long necks. (Pabst).
"Bout time to head over to the shop-- Did enough flapping about nothing really. Just checking in. Who's next?
                                                          Have a good one:
                                                                                   D.B.
P.S. Didja get that starter on D&H? Also got a final E mail from Amigo Will, and he should be in Alaska by now. Good luck to him.

I just got back from the last deer hunt of the year, damn where did the season go. We located a herd of big hogs but it is a archery only  unit we found them on. The Harley is on the donor list for a starter and I will start the surgery as sooon one comes available. I have two knives to finish out, a Bois' D Arc  or persimmon bow to build and the storage shed and breezeway have be to torn off and built back. Fishing starts in March along with an early Rally that my crew always hits around St Paddy day. Thats just to warm up for the rest of the year. I have a week long trip to Cozumel planned for June right after I marry off the youngest son/hunting partner. Will throw in several rallies ,runs and camping trips until the leaves turn again and it is back to the woods.  :P
P.S. I was setting there watching the weather this morning and they were talking about Alaska was going to have highes below zero for several days so my heart goes out to Amigo Will and my pac boots also if he needs them.

Day off today - started to snow again 'bout an hour ago, and supposed to go down to 10 below for the next couple nights, and "warm up" again on Thursday. Been outside carving - making a piece for the Friends of NRA banquet next month - wish they'd have it any other time of year but now - not a good time to be trying to do some fancy cutting with a chainsaw. Can get enough heat off the saws to keep your hands warm, but not your feet. Mamacita just left - on afternoons and not too cool about going out - will make sure I have a big 'ol Absolute and tonic set up for her when she gets home. I go back tomorrow just in time for all the ice in the fuel seperators and frozen relay valves, and cashed starters, etc.
Starting on another project - got a grandson for St. Pat's day last year (first one). When his mother was in kindergarten, I bought her a Chipmunk .22 rifle, and that's the one she learned on. Got the rifle back from her ( think the brother in law had it for a couple years, teaching his kid to shoot and it needs some work) --  So.. Will restock it, with a decent piece of claro, make up a trigger guard from scratch, (anything would look better than the stamping that's on it now), file out a steel grip cap and butt plate, and make up a little ghost ring rear sight all scaled down to look right on it. Figure it would be really cool done up that way - ebony fore arm tip, wrap around checkering - the works. Probably been done before, but we're gonna do it again. Looking forward to it. Seems like something I need to do - guess that's how a guy knows he's getting to be an 'Ol fart. Have taught lots of kids to shoot - always start out getting them to shoot at balloons - and when they do it right - well, you know - instant gratification. Never taught any grandkids before. Man, that's gotta be some kinda special.
Still working on the Springer - went back to stock handlebars, and of course it's giving me plenty of crap. Drilled them and put the wires inside and trying to make do with the cables and lines that were on the apes (12 inchers by the way - not 16s - risers made them look higher than they were). Seems like all will work if we can get them routed right. Tried to tell OL how cool she looked riding it all hung out there in the wind with the apes, forward controls, pony tail straight out behind her (just a little gray starting to show in it nowdays), - that went over like a fart in church. So we'll keep thrashing on it until she says it feels right. I love it.
D&H - never tried making a long bow - even though we have always been way into the wood working. Had a buddy (passed away now) who was into the "buckskinner" thing - made his own flintlocks - and made his own bows and arrows - used hedge / osage orange? Anyway, he hunted in buckskins and moccasins that he tanned and made, and used those handmade bows and arrows - The guy was a hunter, and never had an empty freezer. Seems like he made knives also. Got to be a lot of satisfaction in that.
Snow's really coming good now - dog is asleep by the fireplace, and I don't feel guitly about sitting in front of the computer rather than working on something. Hope I didn't flap too much - just seems like a good time to flap, as we can't shoot, fish or ride.  Spring's coming.
All you guys have a good one:
                                                                            D.B.
P.S.     Bet 'Ol 'Law is down there in Georgia sitting in a tree  stand with a camoflaged T shirt on, while we're up here carrying in firewood.

Here's the Chipmunk and the stock blank. "Before" picture.

Weather here don't know what it's going to do. 65 on Sunday  60 today and the teens forecast for the next few days. Main thing is we need rain, been drier than a popcorn fart for the last 3 months. Ordered the Prestolite starter for my Harley locally he was $19 higher than I could get it on the internet but it is frieght payed so only about $10 higher and he stands behind his stuff.  The boys want to trout fish for the next couple of weekends and it's only 30 minutes from where they stock to our house. Most are 3/4 pounders but ocassiionally you hook into one of these 3-5 pond ones they get into the stocking tank. Then hang on to the Zebco 11 with that 4 pound line. Speaking of dogs mine is ready to do the rabbit hunt after she had to stay home for deer season, she goes fishing with me to

We have the trout stocking here on the first Saturday in April, and then again in the fall. DNR fences off a stretch of the canal, puts in the fish couple days before and by opening morning they are hungry. Usually still cold then - guess the water has to be for the trout. Have to get there early, and head down the towpath in the dark, to get the spot where we have usually have good luck. And yes, sometimes they put in some big ones, and they are a handfull on any light tackle. We use 2 weight fly rods, and I know this is gonna sound nuts, but for bait, the best has been those "Crappie Nibbles" that Berkley makes. Mold one of them on to a No 10 hook, roll it out there not too far, and just let the weight of the hook and leader drift it down slow. Never know what will work - Mepps,
Beetle Spins, - Have seen the trout come up and try to hit bobbers. Limit is five apice - trout stamp is five bucks?  Seems like a pretty good deal.
Here's some from last spring. All 14-16 inchers, but short our limits.

I think we're the only ones to use bait on fly rods, and get plenty of "looks" - but it sure works good.

Those are bigger than the ones they are stocking now. Toward the end of the month the bigger Missouri trout start getting stocked. They are bigger, more aggressive, and fill up the stringer like yours do. Berkley crappie nibbles in hot pink are our favorite bait also. 2 of those nibs on a 14 or 16 treble wrks great with a BB sized split shot about 15" above the hook. I also catch them on a Walmart 7/64 Strobe spinner with a flourecent orange glob of nail polish on the hook shank.

I think the smaller ones are better eatin' though. We fillet the big ones and leave the skin on to hold them together - also have tried smoking them (not such good luck with that). The ones that fit in the skillet whole were the best.

We still have over a month of deer season left.

I just got back from the last deer hunt of the year,

Me to!  Unfortunately I went deerless this week!   :(  Terrible season for me... saw plenty but a real comedy of errors!  Errors on my part.   :-[   Oh well, going in Feb for hogs, small game, varmints, shed hunting, stand site hunting and whatever.  Turkey season starts in March.

Quote
I have two knives to finish out, a Bois' D Arc  or persimmon bow to build

Ah yes, projects!  Must have a hundred going on...  ::)  Including a couple of knives and a stick bow!   ;D

Bet 'Ol 'Law is down there in Georgia sitting in a tree  stand with a camoflaged T shirt on,

Actually I was... but it was a long sleeved t shirt!   ;D  Then the temperature started dropping.  I had to wear my insulated coveralls yesterday!   :o   Musta been down in the low 40's!  But the temperature is 'spose to be REAL low the next few days!  Below freezing, even down in So. Jawja!   :o

bigger Missouri trout start getting stocked.

Those are some nice trout!  I love trout fishing... haven't done any in years.  Did fish the White River in Missouri once though.  That was a great trip.  Wonder if it's still a great trout river?

Showing 13 below at 5 am, but no snow or wind durring the night. One more bad one and then back up into the 20s for the weekend they say. 20s then should feel like spring! Actually hasn't been as busy at work as we expected - will see what today brings.
One of the guys is taking off tomorrow to hunt the late handgun season - going down around Canton somewhwere. His brother now has a S&W .500. Been practicing a lot, and says it is awsome. Not hesitant to try long shots with it if he can get a good rest. Just hope he aint shivering too bad to shoot.

Long time no talk boys;
Bikes are almost done and ready, weather is starting to come around (blackbirds are back), and some guys are already out riding in the salt dust. Been working on the little .22 for the last few weeks and it's starting to look like a rifle now - still bulky and chunky, but showing some nice lines. Making up the trigger guard was a PITA. The grip cap was a casting we cut down, and is too big and the grip is too long, but we can still move it higher. Been a really cool and fun project so far.
Day off, and wondering how and what the rest of you have been doing. Not much traffic here lately.
                Hoping this finds everyone well;

I'm here!  Keep meaning to post this, that or the other and never seem to take the time to do it!  My bad!  :-[  Also need to service my bike, get it back to the dealer so they can fix some of their screw-ups, such stuff as that...

I can't believe I didn't ride this weekend!  Weather was beautiful!  Maybe some evening this week.   :-\

well, last week it got up to 60 degrees for a couple of days so the first day I sholved the last foot of snow that was on my large deck then let it dry off then proceeded to sweep all the acorns off. I could hear harleys going down the main road so I went out to the garage which isn't heated and started the hog up for the first time all winter. Fired right up, keep a battery tender on it all winter. Wanted to take her out but have to much slop to go through to get to the main road, will wait for it to dry up it's a mess now with all the melting snow. Keep the shiny side up, Hooter. ;D

I lived in Montana and used to go on this run: http://www.harleyriderstories.com/legends-page2.htm
By the time I got home I was dam near froze to death, but it was great.
