stock questions
« on: January 08, 2009, 02:37:01 PM »
I'm still wet behind the ears when it comes to all the different NEF stock styles and what-not, but I have a 12ga. barrel that is fitted to a rifle frame, which has the synthetic full pistol grip stock. It is a standard sight ball, and this stock is way too high for the line of sight. Does the straight grip sit lower for a correct line of sight? Are the Pardner and Topper stocks the same as the pistol grip or straight grip? Would a Monte Carlo stock be even higher than the pistol grip?
I appreciate your input. And I really wish there was somewhere that you visually compare all the different stocks. I've looked on H&R site, but I always wonder what style of stock is on what gun. I look in the classifieds and have no idea what kind of stock is being described unless there is a picture. :-\ Thanks a lot, guys.

looking at the H&R web-site, I thought so. I guess I made a lengthy post and did a poor job of trying to say what I wanted to say. Are the Parder and Topper stocks considered to be a straight grip stock? Whe I send my frame in I want to get some nice stocks, and what I'm lookin for is to have a Cinnamon or Camo laminate set that will serve both a bull rifle barrel(Monte Carlo) and a shotgun barrel(I was hoping to get a straight grip buttstock along with a Monte Carlo and just switch buttssocks out for the shotgun barrel and use the same forend for each?) Will a straight grip sit low enough to sight the shotgun barrel? Anybody have any pics of a laminate straight grip?

Straight grip stocks like the BC have low combs, so do some pistol grip stocks like the Topper and Pardner. Low comb stocks work fine for many with scopes, but monte carlo stocks don't work at all for most people for shotgun barrels and may work with sights.

I think, in the end, you'll get tired of switching stocks and barrels around, as Tim, myself and others have.  We just put together a complete rifle or shotgun the way we like it and leave it that way.  I've found swapping stuff around doesn't help accuracy.

Good luck

or you could do what I and many others here do as well. Just put a low comb stock on your receiver, either pistol grip or straight, and use it for a shotgun barrel with a bead, a barrel with iron/open sights, or for a barrel with a scope. It works fine that way and it works for me. I suggest you check the classifieds and get a second hand non Monte-Carlo buttstock (or stock set) and try it for yourself. If it fits YOU and YOU like it, use it. You can usually pick up a pallet wood or synthetic stock set for about $50 or a bit less shipped to your door and they are very simple to remove and install, about a 2 minute job. The non Monte-Carlo synthetic stock sets are more in demand and harder to come by than the Monte-Carlo synthetic sets for just this reason, the non Monte-Carlo sets can be used for all 3 applications while the Monte Carlo sets are pretty well limited to scoped barrels only....<><....:)

Thanks a lot guys. ;) This is truly a great forum.

So, If I'm thinking correctly, I can specify a low comb pistol grip stock in Cinnamon or Camo laminate when I order?

Andy, I've seen many nice stock sets I would love to have bought, but I'm always too late when I find them, and they've already been scarfed up!  :-\ :)

not exactly buddy, there has been mention of true Laminated (not pallet wood laminated) low comb (non Monte Carlo) pistol grip buttstocks I have never seen one. I did redo a laminated pallet wood Monte Carlo into what you speak of but it is not a true laminated camo or cinnamon buttstock. I do not believe they ever made a run of those stocks and you cannot order one. You can however order a pallet wood or synthetic low comb (non Monte Carlo) buttstock. I know about the empty feeling you get when you log on and see in your absence from the sight someone posted and sold just what you have been looking for. It will even get worse now with the separations of the WTS/WTB/WTT postings in the classifieds. At least before there was a chance someone looking through the classifieds to buy something might see your WTB and they might have that item sitting in their gunlocker, now, no chance of that. Exactly what type of buttstock or stock set are you looking for, bearing in mind they do not make a true laminate, pistol grip, non Monte Carlo set...Perhaps one can be found for you among the members, either to buy or trade for your buttstock or stock set.
If this is some sort of a violation or is not allowed here I apologize in advance and just remove the offending part of this post. I want to see if I can help so if that happens just PM me and we can work on this together....<><....:)

Tim I was a little hesitent opening that link thinking there might be a stimpy stock there and I did not have my sunglasses handi. But I remember that set and he did a great job on it. But if you don't mind could you put the link up for my all time favorite custom alteration.
