777 Pellets versus loose 777 powder
« on: January 08, 2009, 04:27:15 PM »
Will my loads shoot the same shooting 2 pellets versus shooting 100 grains of loose powder?  I just wonder what others have experienced.

Thank you,

Providing the gun has already been sighted in they will print rather close. I still would not want to hunt with it until I tested/sighted-in the exact load I shoot for the hunt. I like loose powder over pellets with any propellant.

Probably not the same, but may be close enough out to 100 yards. The 777 pellets are designed as an equivelant to Black Powder. 777 powder is 15% more efficient than Black Powder. So the short answer to your question is NO, your loads will not shoot the same. The velocity of the 100 gr VOLUME loose powder charge will be substantially higher than the 100 gr pellet charge.

That is why you can load 3 50 grain 777 Pellets (150 gr charge) in Magnum capable muzzleloaders, but only about 120 grains VOLUME of loose powder. 777 loose powder came out before the 777 pellets did, they had to reduce the pellets charge to prevent people from overloading their rifles.

Here is some powder equivelancies. Just remember to reduce 777 loose powder by 15%, OR multiply your pellet charge by 0.85 to get equal values.

100 grains VOLUME Black Powder FFG OR Pyrodex RS = 100 gr (2 50 gr pellets) 777 Pellets OR Pyrodex Pellets = 85 grains VOLUME 777 FFG.

2 50 grain 777 Pellets (100 gr charge) = 85 grains 777 FFG VOLUME loose powder.

3 50 grain 777 Pellets (150 gr charge) = 127.5 grains 777 FFG VOLUME loose powder.

Shoot it before hunting with it, you might be surprised. Better to find that out on the range, instead of the woods.

I actully did it at the range to see in my huntsman. And POI was 2.5" different at 100yds. tried varying my load of loose and never did get them to match in that gun the pellets grouped to the LT of the loose powder for some reason.

No they will not shoot the same POI as 100gr of 777 loose is 15% hotter than 100gr of pellets

IMO
I would re sight in with the loose 777 and stay with it , as you will be able to tweak your loads for better accuracy with loose powder  8) ( And besides loose is cheaper than pellets )
But like I said this is JMO.

I did the same thing.. I will never go back to pellet's. 100gr of loose 777 ffg shoots 1.5" higher in my Encore Than the same bullet with 2 pellet's. And fffg is even a little hotter yet..and a little cleaner burning also. But this spring I am going to make the change ofer to BH209.... drop

I'll never use pellets again.  Go to loose, it goes bang!
