22 short in a 22LR chamber
« on: January 08, 2009, 04:28:50 PM »
Was thanking about getting a high dollar air rifle but I can get a 22LR barrel cheaper and just shot shorts. Whould shorts shot good out of a 22LR chamber or should I get a 22 short chamber for better accuracy. This would be maybe a 16 or 18 barrell.

That won't work......22 LR's headspace on the case mouth.

A heeled bullet cartridge like a 22 LR can't headspace on the mouth, they headspace on the rim and folks in pursuit of of accuracy sometimes sort by rim thickness.

If you are looking for accuracy, you aren't doing yourself any favors shooting a short in a long rifle chamber but you certainly give up cheap 22LR alternatives with a sticking with a short chamber.

All rimmed 22 cartridges headspace on the rim. All 22 rifles that handle shorts, longs and long rifle cartridges are by design chambered for 22 LR. They shoot all 22 RF rounds interchangeably. So, yes you can shoot the shorts in 22 LR chamber.

My Contender 22 barrels shoot shorts...OK...not near as accurate as lr.  I had much better luck with lr subsonics and they are way cheaper.  Most shorts I find now are high velocity ???anyway, which I don't understand.   CCI CB shorts were "low" power but accuracy wasn't too hot.  WALT  :)

I shoot 22 short CB Caps at squirrels in my yard.  These are Ultra low velocity. I shoot them out of an older winchester bolt action rifle designed for LR, Longs, and Shorts.  The CB Caps are dead on accurate.  I regularly shoot squirrels in the head out to 30 yards.  CCI is the manufacturer of the CB Caps I use.  Good luck.
