'86 Winchester
« on: January 08, 2009, 04:55:03 PM »
I have an original 1886 Winchester with a great action but a junk barrel. Since it has to be rebarreled anyway, I've been thinking of changing to .45 or .50 caliber. Presently it is chambered for .38-56 and I need to know if I need to change any major internal parts such as the breech block or carrier. Can anyone help me out with this? Thanks. Dan

I don't have the answer you need, but my sugestion would be to call and talk to a gunsmith who specialized in the old Winchesters. Those critters have gotten so valuable lately, it's crazy! I'd give Doug Turnbill a call...have the serial # handy, so he can tell if it's an older, blackpowder version, or the smokeless version.
You might have a good candidate for a rebore job...something to consider.
Good luck, and please post what you find out.

I think, without researching it, that you could re-bore and re-chamber to 45-70 without re-barreling your rifle.
I know of one rifle that had this done years ago.
You would need to replace, or modify the cartridge guides, but I think the case head is the same, so no Bolt mods.
Look into it, I'm going by a shaky memory
