BC and 500 gr. PPB's
« on: January 08, 2009, 06:43:47 PM »
OK, I know there are plenty of guys on here that had tried this already, so I'm asking for advise.
I REALLY want to load up some of Montana Bullet Works' 500 grain paper patched bullets in my .45-70 Buffalo Classic, using smokeless powder. I have read several threads about the short throats on these rifles. Will these bullets work without problems, or am I going to wind seating them deeper than needed?

I haven't tried any paper patched bullets yet, but I had to lengthen the throat in my barrel to enable me to seat 500 grain RN bullets out where they belong.

I wonder how the recoil will be with smokeless?  I've only shot black powder through mine so far.

Just do the ultimate chamber "lengthening" to 45-120, then you don't have to worry about bullet size and throat depth!!  ;D

Although I'm not loading PP, here's what I did with my BC.

I sized an empty case so that the 405gr. RNFP bullet I was wanting to load, would slide in with slight thumb pressure.

I then just barely started the bullet in the case (no powder).

I then chambered it and let the lands push the bullet into the case as necessary.

Then the cartridge was removed and measured.  It measured 2.665.

So now I assume that I can load it to anything equal to, or less than, 2.665, with that same bullet.
