I don't think pumps were ever used by the military however they are used by LEO's so they could be banned . Oh well, right now the new team is going to have their hands full with the economy and there is no way this is going to get fixed in a long while. Get ready for the southern border to be opened all the way.

Yea , I have to agree.

When you boil it all down, the Rem  .223 pump and the Marlin .357 lever are what you come down to, with perhaps the .30-30 lever being a worthy contender as well.

Odd coinkedink there I have all three of those rifles in my gun safe. With a 1911 on the night stand and a .357 close by. ;D

I have considered this question, and purchased two pump action AKs.  5.56X45 & 7.62X39, and they utilize standard AK mags as well.

I'd probably go with a lever .30-30, but I do have a pump .45 Colt or you could be more esoteric and get a Spencer 56-50 (kidding).  I don't think the gun grabbers would be after the lever or pump guns first (they will get around to them though).  .30-30 might be a bit much for inside the house, for close in stuff I'd go with a 1911 or Springfield XD in .40 or .45.  For me, a pistol is just easier to handle and shoot accurately.

Bob, i like them alot.  the piston springs were left in so all you have to do is pull the handle back and let go!  It flies right back by itself.  i have a CZ 527 in 7.62x39 as well.

Lot of good experience here.    I own semi's, levers, bolts, and pumps.    My pump carbine in 3006 is my "go-to" rifle for most hunts.   I just like the effectiveness of the caliber in a short rifle.

The OP asked what would be my self defense gun  should the grabbers outlaw semi's.     If that doomsday scenario played out I would choose a lever, Win 92, in either 357 or 44 mag.     For self defense, 10 rounds of either caliber in the tube and my matched caliber DA revolver will suit me fine.   I live in the suburbs and self defense will be against two legged varmints/predators.

Come to think of it if I lived more rural either wouldn't be a bad choice, as they both are effective on 4 legged critters as well.

And i believe these new troops in our military would have no problem shooting into crowds of civilians if they are ordered to.
I saw one two years ago in a gun store ,he was a Sargent straight out of Iraq ,and he went to a gun store with his brother in law.
When he saw the amount of ARs ,AKs ,and other black rifles his face went cold.
You could tell what he was thinking ,and he was silent the rest of his time on leave.

Likely a REMF. The combat arms units are usually filled with people that like to shoot.
