Handi confusion
« on: January 09, 2009, 04:54:48 PM »
OK!!! Now I've done got myself confused (again). I went to make the next to last payment on my new .44 mag wood stock Handi and guess what!!! They have a brand new .357mag synthetic stock, one of which I've wanted for quite a while... and it's $219.00 + tax. They also have what I thought would be my next Handi, a .223 heavy barrel, wood stock with what looks to me like a 24" barrel (for $279.00). It is right nest to a standard barrel that is supposed to be a 22" barrel and it is about 2" longer, anyway. The problem is that they also have a Mossberg SSI in .270 on clearance for $299.00 + tax.  Now I talk to the guy and he can get another .357 anytime in a couple of days, that takes care of one problem. I'll pick one up later for sure. I've had a .270 before and liked it, but it does have a bit of a kick as I recall. The Mossberg just feels good and seems to have a decent trigger. I haven't seen another .223 with the longer barrel either, so I don't know if I could get another one or not. Does anyone know anything about the longer barrel .223.
Money is a little tight now or I'd just get then both and have done with it. I don't currently hunt, but may start again next season. The .44 mag is all I would need anyway, but the other 2 would be nice for a little more distance and just plan fun. Oh well..... decisions, decisions.. ::)

Those Mossberg SSi's where dogs. They looked good on paper and I guess worked OK. But the co quickly dropped them for greener pastures. The couple I handled and the one I shot (A 30-06) was "clunky". Nice looking and walnut stocks where nice enough. I took a pass. I would suggest you also pass on it and look into a 270 handi if your still wanting that caliber.

That 223 is likely a VARMINT. I have a ULTRA VARMINT with a 24" barrel and the longer heavy barrel is my preference too. Mine shoots very very well right out of the box. Using 52-53Gr bullets and a load of H322 powder sparked with a BR primer.

Good luck,
 CW

Thanks for the heads up cw. I will likely do the .223 for now and the .357 next. If I do go for a deer next year, the .44 or .357 would be enough for around here. Kansas lets you use a .357mag, by the way. Most shots would be around 50-75 yds anyway. The SSI is pretty, but the Handi would be more fun. I don't have a varmint long gun anyway.
