range report on new 44 mag/12 guage combo
« on: January 10, 2009, 01:09:01 PM »
went by wally world this afternoon and picked up a Nikon 2x7x32 prostaff scope and mounted it on the new 44 mag with a set of new warrne rings . i got everything just like i wanted it and grabbed a box of MAGTECH 240 grain SJSP's and headed to the range. ( by the way the range is the field beside my house ) .
first thing i did was clean the gun very good, then i bore sighted it . the first shot at 25 yrds was 3 inches  low but the windage was perfect . after a quick adjustment i put three rounds in the same hole. (bullseye)
then i moved out to the 100 yrd target , my first shot was a little higher than i wanted it but again the windage was on the money . with another quick adjustment i was knocking the bullseye out of the target. then i shot three more rounds down range for a group just a little over 2 inches.
needless to say i am very pleased with the 44 mag and can't wait to try the slug barrel . an accurate gun is very interesting.  ;D

thanks Charlie,

i love hunting with a single shot rifle that shoots a pistol bullet . i killed three deer last year with a 357 handi . a 4 point and a doe dropped in their tracks and an eight point ran about 50 yrds . the doe being the longest shot at 70 yrds , she never knew what hit her.
i can't wait for the season to come around again so i can try the 44 mag, the heavier bullet at the same trajectory as the 357 should be some good medicine for a deer

Mid ,

I traded into that same combo not long ago and just finally got a good range day to tune it in to some hand loads and i must admit it is doing great ..

Havent farted around with the slug barrel yet either , but then again that isnt what i really wanted in the trade ;)

You are gonna like the way the 44 puts deer down.  For the amount of recoil it gives you, it really takes care of business.  I know an 81 year old man who took an elk every year for 20+ years with a Ruger 44 auto.  He had a stroke that left his left arm hanging, and he can aim and shoot the little ruger with one hand.  Has elk all over his property and can take the shot he wants.  Pretty much one shot, one kill.  DP

hi default, yeah, i didn't buy mine because it was a combo , i really just wanted the 44 mag but the slug barrel was a nice extra . man those sabot slugs are expensive , at $3 a pop i hope it don't take many to get it on point.

Did you get complete pass through on all three shots? Charlie

on the 4 point and the eight point it did , but i shot the doe facing me . i hit her right between the shoulder blades busting her spine , the bullet ended up lodged under the skin between her back legs. when i hung her up to clean her i cut the skin down the inside of her legs and the bullet fell out.

 Yeah Mid ,

Those things arent cheap at all , and i'm not about to start buying up shotgun reloading gear just to shoot it cheaper.. Though i did do some looking around and found

   http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=867815

That Hornady just looks nasty ;)  But again not the cheapest out there if cheap is even possible for those saboted slugs.

I had a Ruger Deerfield 44 for many years and that was a ten ring killer at 100.. Have a few animals to that 44s credit and yeah there is no argue'n its kill power , had a doe cutting a trail at 50 and it punched a baseball sized hole out the exit side with a 240gr jacketed soft point .. So that should give you an idea what happened to the yotes that got caught by the 44  ;D
