Depends on how you want to define “Buckshot”. The common (and some not so common) Buckshot sizes run from T (.20”) to 0000 (.375”). Of them, the largest I’ve seen/loaded/fired is 0000, although the largest I’ve worked up a decent load for is 000. The 0000 won’t stack right in a 12 Gauge.

Now if you want to expand the definition a bit to something like “Multiple pellets larger than BBB”, then I’ve loaded some considerably larger.

Three .60” Balls (12 Gauge, 3”)
Three .575” Balls (12 Gauge, 3”)
Two .60” Balls (12 Gauge, 2 ¾”)
Two .575” Balls (12 Gauge, 2 ¾”)
Three .527” Balls (12 Gauge, 2 ¾”)

i  once put  some 50 cal  muzzleloader balls  in  a shell when i was  young
but was   afraid to fire  it

winchester .410 loads have 3 or 5 per load depending on 21/2 or 3 inch shells .
dixie darlings have 2 per load

how did  they pattern??
The .60" loads put all balls within 3" at 40 yards out of a Modified choke. The .575" loads shoot better with a Full. The .527" balls, well, I'm still working on that one. If I didn't have a .527" mold, I wouldn't mess with it.

The three ball .60" load is a clone of Dixie's, load information from Mr. Gates.

I played with some of the Round ball.
.451
.490
and .577
that I have for Black powder guns.
I looked at the rounds and figured out how many in 1oz, 1 1/8 oz, and 1 1/4 oz loads for the 12 ga
and 2 oz for the 10 ga and loaded according to what i could fit in the hull based on the wad and powder charge That I already load for.
I also made a few buck and ball rounds using 00 or #1 buck and the .577 ball for the 12 and 20 ga.

The few I made up and fired I was not real impressed with and could not think of a reason to make up more over using commercial slugs, or a load of 00 buck.

There is a lot more to developing a true performance load than dropping some soft lead balls into an existing wad/load combo.

I have personally fired many patterns from the Tri-Ball 3" buckshot loads (manufactured by Dixie Slugs ammo co.) and 4 inch full choke patterns at 40 yards are norm. These 3/4th ounce hard cast .60 caliber pellets also out penetrate most 12 gauge slugs. Most importantly, these loads shoot to point of aim at 40 yards with my 870 Express with 26" vent rib bbl.

I can see reasons for using other combo and making up loads that will out proform factory loads.
I swapped out loads as a starting place as I knew those loads worked and would not damage a gun.
I just looked at the options I had in my black powder kit.
The limited time I had at the loading bench at the time had me working on POT loads.
Found the faster you drive the shot the larger it needs to be.
So I can see faster loads with heavier shot to get more out of them for larger or dangerous game.
Trust me, If I were hunting something with fangs and claws in heavy cover I would want a 4 Bore loaded with a load similar to the 9-00 buck loads where they stack in 3's with balls of .490 - .577

From the Dixie Slugs Forum:

"Dixie Slugs will be closed for orders from Nov.1st to Dec.1st.
Any orders received here during that period will be put together during December.
This has been done to allow our prople hunting time and Thanksgiving time."
