Can you PP a "standard" lead cast bullet with lube grooves?
« on: January 10, 2009, 05:03:34 PM »
I have a Model 71 Mauser (11mm).  The normal bore size is .446.  I have bullet molds for that size.  I also have a bullet mold for another "11mm" that drops at .439.  This is a Lyman mold and has several normal lube grooves and was not designed with PP in mind.   Can you PP a standard cast bullet with lube groves?  I was thinking a PP might bring the undersized bullet up to a workable diameter.

What do you think??

Waldog.

You want to be careful with the !!mm they have a groove diameter from .436-.464.
I dont know which 11 mm you have .43 Spanish, 43 Mauser, Turk, French, Beaumont had a lot with the 71's so be careful.

Yes you can patch a GG bullet as long as you don't over size it.
A over sized PP bullet will raise the chamber pressure as much as a jacketed bullet will.
The 71 Mauser is not a strong action so be careful with over sized bullets.

I've had good results doing that for a 38-55.

I can't answer for KTW, but most guys that use GG (grease groove) bullets just run the patched bullet through a sizer.

I shoot .35 caliber pp bullets.  When I start with a GG bullet I first run 'em through a 9mm (.356") sizer die.  Then I patch 'em.  Then I run 'em through a .358" die.  If I use pure lead the number of torn patches is minimal.

If I cast with wheel-weight alloy & don't pre-size to 9mm I get more torn patches.  But not so many as to make the project worthless.  Besides I just repatch the bullet and then size it again.  After the second patching the patch almost never tears.

So to answer the first poster's question - Yes you can use regular bullets.  If you have a undersized bullet that's even better - but even if you have bullets intended for your caliber you can patch 'em and size 'em.
