New Handi
« on: January 10, 2009, 08:43:00 PM »
Well, a guy came and bought my old truck, so I had some extra cash this afternoon. Decided that I would get my wood stock .44 mag Handi out of lay-a-way. I also picked up some lead barrel sinkers and will slug the barrel next week. Hopefully, I can get it ready and take it to the range next week, too.

Thanks in part to cwlongshot's information on my previous post and partly due to the interest a new .357 mag Handi with the synthetic stock was getting from other lookers, I also put the .357 on lay-a-way while there. I figure it will be the truck and fishing/camp gun most of the time when I go to the river.

I don't know if it is common or not, but the .357 was priced about $60.00 less than the other Handi's there. It was $219 and there were a couple of wood stock .223s, a .44mag, and a 45/70 ( both with plastic stocks) that were $279. Does anyone know if the .357 is usually less than the others. I did notice that the barrel was marked SB2, but there was a warning stamped in the frame that said to not fit any barrel other than .357 mag, .44 mag, or shotgun to it. Evidently it is on the SB1 frame. My new .44 mag did not have the same warning, so I'm guessing that it must be the SB2 frame. Doesn't matter, because I don't intend to get another barrel for either. I may pick up another .357 later on and punch it to .357 maxi, though.

The idea of the SB 1 frames were to save money. I am not sure if $60 difference is really the difference in manufacturing cost however. You can check the FAQ to see if the 44 mag is a SB 2 frame. There can still be some floating around. 44 Mags (SB 2) and 500 S&W were selling for $300 in my area because they were legal for deer here. 357 were legal also, but they were not available on a frame at that time (fall of 2007). There has been some debate over the 357 with a SB 1 frame could handle the pressure of a 357 Max. I think the consensus was that it will. BTW I paid $250 for a plastic stocked 44 Mag with an SB 2 frame bought in the fall of 2007. It was the best deal I could get at the time. The plain wood stocked ones were selling for $300 as mentioned above. I have since swapped out the stock for a laminated one and a laminated fore end. Good Luck and Good Shooting.

Gander Mts is almost 45-60 dollars more than other local shops in my area of PA.  I have seen Ultra hunters and Ultra varmit for under $240 at Woodlands World in Uniontown PA.  I wanted them soooo bad, but waited for about 3 months before they sold just before this CHRISTmas.  What a relief, they were killing me.  The hunter was Cimm Lam in 243 and the Varmit was syn varm stock and fluted in 204. :o  Hope they found a good home. ;D  Or maybe thay had some oils on the latches and they'll be on the used shelf soon and then I'll really find a deal.

Hey a guy can dream right?     ;D ;D

Yeah, I have had a real tough time with the Gander Mountains in my area.  When you can actually find something that has a price on it, you darn near faint from sticker shock.  This seems to be a fairly recent problem as in the past I bought 90% of my gear / guns from them.  I now have bought my last 10-12 guns from Sportsman's Warehouse.  I'm not really sure what's up with GM, but it sort of bums me out to think that they may not be around in the future.

So anyway, I was at my local Sportsman's Warehouse last weekend and this Ultra Varmint in 204 Ruger somehow made it into my cart  ;D.  I went there to buy some Varget and primers and it got weird.  In my mind, I knew I had a new 6-20x50 AO scope at home that needed a home atop a new rifle, I just wasn't sure it would be that day I would find it a home.  I really thought I wanted a Hornet, but the 204 intrigued me.  Looking at the ballistics of the 204, I was quite amazed as I didn't realize it was quite that hot, wow does that cartridge rock and roll.....

Below is a picture of it soon after I mounted the scope up.  I received the dies, brass and bullets from Midway last week.  I did buy some Hornaday factory ammo and I loaded up a few rounds with non other than Varget.  I did take a few shots with it and determined that the barn door is safe for now at 100 yards as of course my bore sighter won't fit the 20 cal bore.  I think I will do the large close target thing today with it and get it sorted out.

LOL, that's funny.  You know I think there actually are people that use bore sighters, but you shouldn't make fun of them like that.  Really, can't get sighted in because you can't look down the bore of a single shot....that's funny.

The other thing you are gonna like about that 204 is even with that scope turned up to near 20x you can still see the bullet impact the target.Kurt

I really like it.  I did a lot of shooting and handloading for it today.  I will start a seperate thread to discuss that as I don't want to hijack this thread any more than I have..
