RWS 350 vs Benjamin Discovery (both in .22 cal)
« on: January 11, 2009, 11:20:40 AM »
I am trying to understand the pros and cons of these two rifles.  To make the comparison even, let's take the same caliber to be .22 and 15gr pellet.

From my little knowledge on air rifles my observation is:

*  RWS 350 shoots at a constant speed by acting the spring piston once.
*  PCP Discovery needs to be pumped to 2000 psi before shooting but you can shoot several shots at varying velocities.
*  Accuracy seem to be just about even but giving and edge to the PCP.
*  Scopes don't last long in the springers as they do in PCP rifles.

So what is your observation and why would you chose one over the other?

Camba, I have been debating the same thing as you for the last three months.
I shoot springers and love them.
I have low and a medium power springers that I have been very pleased with but, I decided I wanted an air rifle with more power. Something that would cleanly kill a squirrel up to 50 yards.
I started out looking at magnum springers. Because of extra maintenance, harsh recoil, length, and weight, I decided a magnum springer was not for me.
I like my guns light, accurate, and powerful if I can have it my way.
Then I started looking at PCPs. I did not know how much I would like them and they are expensive.
When I came across the Benjamin Discovery with an operating pressure of 2000 psi, it got my attention.
These guns can be modded to about 25+ ft/lb of energy.
A gun with an operating pressure of 2000 psi is a heck of a lot easier to pump up than one that operates at 3000 psi. So i`ve been told.
Gun + pump for less than $400.
I still decided to wait and see the new PCP from Benjamin before making a purchase.
I waited but did not like the weight of the new Marauder.
So I ordered a Mac1 prepped Disco.
I decided to buy a scuba tank instead of the hand pump. I should get 60-80 fills per tank at a refill cost of $5..
I decided on the Disco because of low operating pressure, light weight, compactness, and accuracy.
The Marauder is a nice gun but not for me at the present time.

I ran a few pellets over my chronograph the other night indoors and here is what I got with the Disco.

 CPH 14.3 gr  25 ft/lb

 Beeman FTS  14.7 gr. 25 ft/lb

 Crosman Pointed 14.3 gr  25 ft/lb

JSB Diablo Exact Jumbo 15.8 gr.  26 ft/lb

 Beeman Kodiak 21.0 gr.  26 ft/lb

Sorry, I should have posted the chrono results in my last post.

Do you have pictures of it?  How good does it shoot?

Camba, I do not have the gun yet. I was told by Tim @ Mac1 it should be shipped this past friday. I should get it this week.
I have scope, pellets, and full scuba tank ready.
Only problem is, it is very cold where I live right now.
Will have to try it out in my basement. Only ten yards. May even be too cold in the garage to hold still to aim good.
It will take me a little while to learn to use it. My first trip to the dark side.

For more information: try Crosman website and the "Yellow Forum". On the Yellow forum, they have a section dedicated to the Discovery.

UpDate: I recieved my prepped Disco from Mac1 two days ago.
I like it a lot. It is too easy to shoot one holers @ 10 yards "garage".
Hope to try it at longer ranges with chrono soon.
I got one with a nice looking stock.
I put a Clearidge Ultra RM w/fine cross hairs up top.
Makes for a super neat rig.

ICE:

It's been a while since I check this post.  Have you done some more shooting?  How much is the cost of a SCBA tank?

Ice...one more question for you.  I checked the Mac1 web site and couldn't find any information about the disco or tuning the same.   Did you buy your's from Tim and have the tune done by him?  Or, do you have to purchase the Disco then ship to Tim for the tuning.

Also, where did you buy your scope?

Camba, I bought a used SCUBA tank from my local dive shop for $100..
It has four years before needing a hydro test.
I get somewhere around 60-80 fills off the tank.
The shop only charges me $5. for a refill of clean dry air.

Silvertp, you can order a gun, pump, or both from Mac1.
A prepped Disco with pump will cost right at $400..
He gets the guns from Crosman and goes through the them. He does some custom work on them to make sure they are efficient, accurate, and trouble free.
A trigger job is included in the prep.
He does not have much information on his website about prepping Discos but, everyone is ordering from him.
You can order a gun seperate and buy a SCUBA tank seperate or buy gun and pump from him.
He can set you up with everything you need.
Give him a call. He is a nice guy and will answer any questions you may have.
If you go the SCUBA route, you will need a fill yoke. Tim has those too.

Ice...thanks for the information.  Seems I am going through another one of my "gun buying" phases again.  Just picked up a Thompson Contender frame and a Pro-Hunter frame and am rebuilding my Ruger Mark I .22.  When I get caught up with that I believe my next priority will be the Disco.

Thinking about effectively shooting starlings out to 50 yards with a pellet gun sounds like a lot of fun (for me).

I have bought both of these in the last couple of months. I really love the disco over the RWS it is much more accurate for me. and the weight is better. I highly recomend the Benjamin.
