taming shotgun kick
« on: January 11, 2009, 11:33:33 AM »
Whats the best method for taming down a shotgun that jumps out of your forward hand when you shoot? I shot my new-to-me full choke 12 Ga. today and it jumped out of my hand twice, and the second time I held tight and was expecting it. I didn't see any, and may have overlooked, but are there any tips in the FAQ's. Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks a lot.

A stock with less drop and a good recoil pad should help, weight in the stock is next. A mercury recoil reducer works better than an equal amount of dead weight, but costs a bit more, all of these tips except the stock drop are in the FAQs, I think!!  ;)

You can check out the Mercury Recoil Reducers at the following address:

www.mercuryrecoil.com

I installed one of them in the buttstock bolt hole on my 12GA Ultra Slugger...Made a world of difference to me...YMMV.  The reducer was one that I had the manufacturer cut to fit hole...I measured it and provided that figure to the man at C&H Research...It showed up about a week or so later and it was a perfect fit.

Don't forget porting and backboring.

I'd much rather be remembered for being a great shot than having the most expensive gun

for every % you increse the weight of the gun, you reduce the recoil by the same % ( to a point). heres what i did to tame my 10 gauge. take a foot of 3/4" copper pipe and put a cap on one end (just slip it on). fill the pipe with lead then cut off the cap end. remove the recoil pad, cut the pipe to length (1 ' shorter) and reinstall the pad. don't over look the lenght of pull either. had to add a inch to mine. keep in mind the gun will be heavy. you could fill the stockbolt hole with lead shot. trim the pipe down or increse or decrese shot to your taste.
