Best Metering Powder for 7.62x39??
« on: January 11, 2009, 02:49:10 PM »
I have a Lyman Ideal powder measure #55 and am going to load up some 7.62x39's with a 123 gr soft point.  I do not want to have to spend hours on the bench measuring and trickling kernels to make my load.  Could anyone give me their favorite powder and load for their best metering powder for this caliber?

Thanks,

Bob

Any ball powder measures well.

AA1680 if you just want to use a dumper,I just use the dumper to get close and use my trickler to top my load off, time isn't a problem for me.

with a quality measure such as you have just about any 7.62x39 powder will meter very well, like you I find weighing individual charges for rifle rounds to be a complete waste of time. For my 7.62x39 bench gun every round I've fired has been propelled with thrown charge. Has my accuracy suffered?.......NO..... I still get 100yd 5 shot groups that measure in the .2's and .3's.

What I find Ironic is most reloaders are fine with throwing handgun charges but are scared to death to throw rifle charges. This thinking is completely backwards as as the margin of diffrence from one charge to the next is hundreds if times greater for a 6grn charge of handgun powder vs a 60grn charge going in a rifle

a quarter of a grain on a 6 grain handgun charge is 4.1%

a quarter of a grain on a 28 grain 7.62x39 charge is only 0.89%

a quarter of a grain on a 60 grain 30-06 charge 0.41%
