Range time....finally
« on: January 11, 2009, 06:38:46 PM »
I finally had the oportunity to get out to the range with my 17 sportster. I ended up having to mount the scope using just one ring to get it far enough backnso I could see through the thing. Scope turned out to be a little better that I was anticipating, but still has way too many things working against it.
1) Glass could be clearer, but not bad out to 50 yards. (6X)
2) Couldn't focus both the crosshairs and the target at any range no matter how hard I tried.
3) Fattest crosshairs I have ever seen, completely covers a 3/4" orange dot at 100 yards.

I started at 25 yards with a shoot-n-see target and a box of Federal 17 grains. First 5 rounds were low and right about an inch and a half both ways. After a quick scope adjustment, I was in the ball park and shooting 3/4" groups of the bags. I set up fresh targets at 50 and 100 yards and re-sighted the scope at 50 yards, still getting 3/4" groups at 50 yards. I tried centering the crosshairs at 100 yards and shooting about an inch and a half high, move up one dot on the crosshairs and was shooting about an inch and a half low, groups opened up to about 1 1/2"-2". The 6x scope just wasn't up to it at 100 yards.

There was another member there with a Marlin clip-fed bolt action 17HMR that he was shooting for the first time as well, and I have to say, this little H&R impressed me. My groups were half the size of his at 50 yards. My bigger scope that I ordered last week is supposed to be here tomorrow, will have to see what difference a 6.5x-20x will make.
