7600 plastic bolt cover?
« on: January 12, 2009, 06:33:34 PM »
  Howdy;
I just picked up my new 7600 in .243.
Great wood, fit and finish is what I wanted, but.................
The bolt cover is made of plastic, is this a new thing or the way it's been for a while?
I can't wait to shoot it!
 Thanks

I have a 760 that was bought new in 1966 and it has a plastic bolt cover also. I don't know if Rem. ever used anything else or not but if they did I haven't seen it.

The Remington Model 4 I owned (bought in early 1980s) and the 7400 I currently own (purchased 2000) have plastic covers. Both cracked behind the bolt retract handle after just a very few rounds, both worked flawlessly with this crack for many more rounds and I consider the crack a non factor. I owned a 742 but I cannot recall the  cover composition. As a youth, IIRC, my neighbor's 740 had a metal cover. Have never seen them break on the 760/7600 rifles tho!

Years ago I had a 760, in .270. that had a metal shroud. This was the model that had the rounded forearm with vertical grooves in it. Trouble with it was when you tipped it sideways, it would give out a metallic clank! But, it sure would shoot. Gave it to my Son who promptly sold it!!!!

Ron/Pa,
That is very sad to hear.
My hunting partner in high school had a 760 carbine in 30-06, ever since I shot that rifle [long time ago] I have wanted one.
Now at 51 This one is a gift from my Wife.
I will be in the desert this weekend.

Only early M 760's had a metal cover. I've never seen a plastic cover break but that's not saying it couldn't happen with enough force. A 7600 .243 ought to be a deer killing machine. Nice rig.

I have a 7600 in .308. Have had it for a while. Alot of ammo through it no problem with the plastic cover.

Only early M 760's had a metal cover.
Early is right...they changed them to plastic (or, more specifically a black nylon resin called Zytel) around 1955. My buddy has an old one withe the metal ejection port cover but it's the only one I have ever seen...

Don't worry; the plastic will do you fine! ;)

I just saw a 740 on the used gun rack yesterday and it did have the steel dust cover.
To bad it's in 30-06, As I have that  covered.
Thanks to you all for the replies.
