Neocon Columnist Calls For Military Draft, Cites Possible Invasion Of Pakistan
Says "new American nationalism" needed for survival

A Washington Times columnist has claimed that a universal military draft is a key necessity if America is to survive throughout and beyond the 21st century.

Tony Blankley, also a former Reagan speechwriter, a former Newt Gingrich press secretary, and currently a Fellow at right wing think tank the Heritage Foundation, makes the call in his new book American Grit.

Blankley says that the US needs a "new nationalism that puts America's survival first."

In his opinion this equates to subjecting all eighteen year olds to two years of required military service.

"If we don't do a lot of things smart and tough, we could get overwhelmed by the rise of China, the rise of India, the rise of radical Islam." Blankley told the hosts of Fox & Friends on Monday.

"We've failed to exploit our energy. We're not paying enough attention to what our kids are learning -- Bill Ayers is actually a senior person in guiding the curriculum design of America." he said.

"I don't like it, I love the volunteer army ... but we don't have enough troops," Blankley stated.

"When George Bush wanted to have the surge, he was told by the senior generals we didn't have the extra 20,000 troops to finish the war. ... Now Obama wants to go to Afghanistan ... but he says we don't have the troops unless we pull them out of Iraq. What happens if Pakistan goes jihadi? We don't have the troops to go in there and stop them from taking over the nuclear weapons."

"If we had had enough troops in Iraq, we wouldn't have lost 4,000 great young men and women," Blankley claimed. "We needed to flood the field ... with 300,000 troops occupying every village and every building and they would never have been able to rise up."

I think everyone should have to serve 2 years right out of High School.  It would help make adults out of them.

I was drafted in 1969, when i went for induction i was 21 years old, i went
through the physical again then was told i was too old, they were taking no one over 20.
I have since then on several occasions thought that i should have volunteered,
i was ready to go "had my mind right" i some times think i missed out.
If we all think back to when the US had a draft, you saw young guys come home that seemed to be way more adult than the ones that didn't go. These
guys were ready to take chances in business, and knew if it was going to get
done they could and would do it. since the draft our youth has lost something.
They know they are not going in the military good grades or not, they seem to have little respect for what so many fought and died for, they just don't seem to care.

With a draft ... maybe the citizens would not be so quick to send Americans off to die for a political agenda.

I remain convinced that the Vietnam War ended because of the draft lottery (not protests and not common sense and not because we 'won"). When the upper middle class couldn't hide their kids in college or grad school .. the war quickly shut down  ... maybe the same logic needs to be applied to the war in Iraq?

Wouldn't bother me to see the draft, both my kids already are serving. Be nice to see some of the filthy, lazy,  liberal scum, do something to earn their keep for once. Boy would the limp wristed liberal babies cry if they got drafted. I'd love to be the DI for a platoon of them, I'd have em balling their eyes out.

2 years of service, mandatory, right out of high school? It is America. Be whatever you wanna freaking be, whenever you want! Be a doctor, lawyer, a fast food worker, who cares, it is their choice. A dollar a pop per copy and paste and they would be millionaires!!! Why defend the 2nd Amendment if you crash the rest? As was once said, in some movie I can't remember, there is nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer. We have been laid the foundation. Why break the bricks? Every fighter, bomber pilot, and every ground troop telling them where to go is a volunteer! That is what the United States is about. If you want mandatory service go to the EU. They will welcome you.

I was drafted in 1965.  Got my "Greetings", however, after I had already enlisted.  The draft was a way of life then.  Sometimes it has been necessary to have a draft.
I believe most vets will say that they wouldn't trade their service for anything in the world.

Actually, when I read all of the lines in what the "Neocon" was quoted as saying in what the original cut & paster posted here, most of them make sense to me.

if you will look up and down the streets of most cities, and malls you see
"right out of high school kids" looking for something to get into, they don't have a clue about being a butcher, baker or candlestick maker, give them a place to decide. But i guess it is better to let mommy and daddy take care of them from now on. when the draft was on they stayed in school to stay out of the draft,
and became something, now they don't care, have nothing to be proud of.
Maybe some of you can encourage them to be proud of their country, of
course a lot of you aren't proud of it either.

I agree with the founders.

The Tenth Amendment clearly affirms that the federal government has only the powers granted to it, and neither the history of conscription nor a century's worth of Supreme Court waffling can change the fact that direct federal conscription is unconstitutional or, if you prefer, an extra-constitutional arrangement that may have been necessary during the world wars, but is not for that reason a valid precedent now.

We sure owe a lot to many of those "indentured servants" don't we?  I knew many and hold their memories in the highest honor.

I didn't like Lyndon Johnson as CIC, but service doesn't hinge on one's preferences. Obama is not my choice for CIC either, but better men than I will continue to serve under him with honor and bravery, even if he's not their choice.  I am thankful that they do.

Well, that would sort of make Congress' power to declare war and the President's position as Commander in Chief (per the Constitution) rather tenuous.  Somehow I don't think the Founders (brilliant men that they were) would grant these powers without the ability to create an army.

I was surprised to read this as the resistance to the draft was exceptionally strong in my era, and I hadn't recalled any significant challenges to its constitutionality.

Constitutional Topic: The Draft

The Constitutional Topics pages at the USConstitution.net site are presented to delve deeper into topics than can be provided on the Glossary Page or in the FAQ pages. This Topic Page concerns the draft. The draft is seen in the Constitution at Article 1, Section 8, Clause 12.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Constitution does not directly mention the word "draft" or even the older "conscription," but its authorization for the Congress to "raise and support Armies" is a clear indication of the same concept - to use the resources of the nation to create or man an army.

Today, the draft in the United States is administered by the Selective Service System. Although at the time of this writing the U.S. does not have an active draft, the SSS is in operation and actively campaigns to get young men to register so that should a draft ever be needed, it has ready lists of who is eligible. According to the SSS, registration for the draft is required of all men ages 18 through 25. Forms to register are available at all U.S. Post Offices, as well as online. Failure to register can result in a fine of up to $250,000 and disqualification from many federal programs, such as student aid. This system has been in place since 1980.

Several questions concerning the draft arise each time the United States is threatened with military action, or the United States threatens military action. The first, and most basic, is: "Is the draft constitutional?" The plain answer to this, noted in the introductory paragraph, is that it is. Conscription is clearly anticipated by the Constitution. The Constitution did impose one small but key restriction on a conscripted army - any allocation of funds to support the army can only have a life of two years. Any allocation thereafter must be reauthorized by Congress. Since the House of Representatives is elected every two years, this is a safeguard against runaway armies. If the people are not satisfied with the way a draft is being run, they can elect a House that will not authorize further funding

I have an even better idea.  Only those who have served, can vote.

Why stop there??  We could also add land ownership requirements and literacy requirements.  Then we could revert back to dis-allowing women, blacks, and native americans the right to vote.  I'm sure the supreme court won't mind reversing all of its previous rulings on the rights of suffrage.

Oh, and there is a name for a country controlled exclusively by the military.  Its called a Military Junta.  I'm sure the Libyans love this type of government.

Anybody who is in favor of giving those crooks who inhabit our government even more control over the people's lives has a serious screw loose,...maybe two.

They're taking plenty of power without even asking. Don't voluntarily give them anything.

It's going to be all you can do to provide them with what they're demanding from you already.

Conscription is slavery. If you want to live in a country where the government enslaves it's people,..go find one somewhere other than in the U.S.A.

This country was founded by people who were trying to get out from under the thumb of the government.

Only a major knothead would be in favor of putting the people back under the thumb of the government.

I don't think that opining about the pros and cons of the draft means that one wants to give more control to crooks or has screws loose, certainly not any more than allowing someone argue you out of your opinion without a reasoned discussion.

They're taking plenty of power without even asking. Don't voluntarily give them anything.
Right now we have an all volunteer military.  When you voluntarily join the military, you automatically will, no if ands or buts, subordinate yourself to higher authority - completely.  You will give up plenty and you will give plenty - even for the folks who don't want to serve but enjoy the benefits of your service.  If everyone followed your advice, we wouldn't have a military.

It's going to be all you can do to provide them with what they're demanding from you already.
Maybe so, Maybe so.

Conscription is slavery. If you want to live in a country where the government enslaves it's people,..go find one somewhere other than in the U.S.A.
A little overbroad with the rhetoric, isn't it?  Technically I was conscripted, about the same time as I enlisted. I was not a slave and to suggest that service means one wants to live where the government enslaves its people is ludicrous.  Go find somewhere other than the USA?  Pretty severe with the options you extend to others, huh?

This country was founded by people who were trying to get out from under the thumb of the government.
Your right - specifically the British government.  And apparently, the founders constitutionally empowered the congress to raise an army - which, in one form or another requires that soldiers give up autonomy (while they are serving) and follow orders.

Only a major knothead would be in favor of putting the people back under the thumb of the government.
We do need a strong military. By most information I have been exposed to, a volunteer military is the better option for many reasons.  If we cannot fill our military requirements on a volunteer basis (even restricted from recruiting on some campuses now?) the draft may be the only other answer.  Absurd rhetoric and name calling doesn't make much of a point.
