7.62 X 39 case
« on: January 13, 2009, 02:00:24 PM »
Has anyone ever used the 7.62x39 case as a wildcat basis and necked it down to other calibers like 25 or 6 MM ?
If so could the SKS rifle be re barreled safely for such a round ?

The 7.62x39mm case has been used for a number of smaller bore wildcats.  You might even consider the Russian 5.45 x39 as a wildcat that became a military round.  I believe the parent case has also been necked for a 6mm round that is used in PPC shooting.  I also read the Russians have necked it up to 9mm for a subsonic special purpose round.

Can you rebarrel a SKS - yeah, but why bother.  If youwant to try the 5.45 caliber round you can purchase those in one of the many Kalashnikov (AK) formats and probably save yourself one heck of a lot of $.  If this helps.....  Mikey.

I'm shooting my 3rd rifle built on a Ruger no. 1 action, Hart barrel, 1-14 twist. The cartridge is 30 PPC made up from 7.62x39 brass. Groups in the .200's @ 100 yds on good days. It especially likes bullets in the 125-150 weight range.

The Aussies have tried a 6.5x39 and it works out O.K.  Not a Grendle but close and no hassle with the Grendle Folks. ;D

Is there any 7mm's built on this case?  I shoot a Contender barrel in .308 bore for this cartridge.  Fantastic!

The 5.45x39 is not based on the 7.62x39 case.  The 5.45x39 is much closer to the .223 Remington than the 7.62x39, dimensionally speaking.  The 5.45 has a .394" head versus the .223s .373" head and the 7.62x39mm's .447" head.

To the OP:  If you're wanting to wildcat off of the 7.62x39, you can do it.  Rebarreling an SKS will be fine.  It might get expensive, but people don't usually make wildcats to save money, right?  If you go with a 6mm wildcat, have your gunsmith cut the chamber with a 6mm PPC reamer, but have him open the neck a little bit to help feeding (6mm PPC chambers are usually cut with a tight neck to help accuracy, but can cause feeding problems in a semi-auto).

The 7.62x39 has been necked to just about every suitable caliber, I've seen both the 17 and 19 in action, and the the .17 is well overbore, but the 19 and 20 are okay. No reason you could not re-barrel an SKS to whatever you want, but I would use a different platform if it were me. The SKS is not real conducive to scope mounting and holding zero, and you may run into feeding and cycling problems when you start making the changes.

If there is a 7mm wildcat based on this little case, what is it called?

I definately agree with Reed in that the SKS is not a good platform to build a custom rifle on. If your thinking about playing with wildcats Savage actions are the easist to rebarrel and you can even change them yourself. If this is going to be a 1 shot deal you can use about any old military bolt action with far better results.

I guess that when you neck a 7.62x39 down a bit to .308 instead of .311, it is technically a wildcat.

I have a nice little pistol barrel for my Contender that is amazing!  I have been shooting a RCBS 180 grain cast lead bullet with 4 grains of RedDot.  At short distances it will put them all though one 1/2" hole!
