HOW IS THE WEATHER ?
« on: January 15, 2009, 12:31:31 AM »
How are you boys and gals holding up.
I would like too hear some first hand accounts of what your weather is like and how you are coping.
Blessings

PS--Here on the Gulf Coast of Texas we are not having a bad time of it. Though we have had some heavy frost this week we have had NO wind. That in itself is amazing for this part of the country. This effect has made it most pleasant. Low humidity, low temperatures, no wind and lots of sun have made the days very plesant.

Kinder chilly but they say it's gonna get much colder. In fact I'm quite surprised it's as mild as it is today. I looked at the thermometer on the back porch awhile ago and it read around 28. I didn't go out on the porch just looked thru the window on the door.

The wind has the wind chimes dancing a jig this morning again. It seems for the last few months the wind seldom stops which isn't that normal for us really. I think if I had a windmill I could make enough electricity to run my house off it the way our wind has been blowing.

The prediction is for perhaps single digits tonight tho and tomorrow it isn't to rise even to the freeze mark and winds are again to blow. We're supposed to have wind chills near or below zero. That's kinda rare here and doesn't happen every winter even. They are talking of this cold front bringing the coldest weather here in six years.

It's supposed to be 23 here Saturday morning.  I hunt about 45 min. north of here.  It's supposed to be 13 up there.  That's really cold for this part of the country.  It's been very Spring like up until a few days ago.

After the pineapple express went through here last week, we've had pretty decent weather.  I've been kayaking on the Columbia River and cutting firewood--working in my shirtsleaves.

Sunshinse and mild termperatures are predicted for at least another week.  I'm hoping that we can slide right into February, which is often quite nice and not return to winter at all.

Northwestern Illinois - clear, sunny, and half hour ago it was 21F below.  High today predicted at 8 below, 24 below overnight tonight.
Clinton, Iowa near here was reading 29 below a while ago.

This has helped tremendously with our mosquito and box elder bug problems. ;D

Wal no Willum not exactly. In my life time I can recall but once when ponds that size froze over solid and even then not deep or thick enough to support a person's weight. I was once tempted to check to see if I could walk on the ice in a pond somewhat larger than the one I have but thought better of it cuz it was mighty cold out and I'd have hated to have gotten wet as cold as it was and as far from home as I was that day. I did find a few large rocks and tossed them onto it none broke thru but I was able to hear ice crackiing well out into the pond from it.

That day I'd guess the pond a few acres in size had ice at least 3" thick maybe a wee bit more close to the bank where I was. Likely well out on it the ice was thinner.

I'll be very surprised if at any time this winter I see even a thin sheet of ice fully cover my pond. It just don't get that cold here for long enough to do much freezing of the surface of such ponds.

We got about 5 or 6 inches of snow last night. Todays high is suposed to be 16 degrees. It is suposed to go down to -3 tonight and tomorrow with a high of 7 degrees. The say with wind chill it should feel like -30. This in no way compared some some folks on this site but it is plenty cold for me. I smoke and when it is that cold out it gets harder to breath and makes me cough sometimes. Dale

It's beautiful, I'm enjoying the sunshine and warmth.  When I left North Pole the 6th it was 62 below.  When I got to Miami it was 80 degrees.  A cold front is supposed to be going through, and it cooled down yesterday into the high 60s and low 70s.  Still beautiful to me.  This morning it is a little cooler, by that I mean I am not sweating as much.  I'd say it is in the mid to high 60s this morning, havn't looked at the weather on TV to know what it is.

The wife called last night.  The cold snap finally broke and the temp went up to 34 above yesterday with snow.  When the Jet Stream moved south it brought you guys the cold front and weather system that had been beating us up so badly in Alaska for the last two weeks.

Well William,

It was so cold . . .
we had to stop eating with metal cutlery. Some people walked around for days with spoons or forks stuck to their tongues!

It was so cold...
hitchhikers were holding up pictures of thumbs!

It was so cold...
roosters were rushing into Kentucky Fried Chicken and begging to use the pressure cooker!

It was so cold . . .
when I dialed 911, a recorded message said to phone back in the spring!

It was so cold . . .
the optician was giving away free ice scrapers with every new pair of eyeglasses!

It was so cold . . .
kids were using a new excuse to stay up late: "But Mom, my pajamas haven't thawed out yet!"

It was so cold . . .
Grandpa’s teeth were chattering - in the glass!

It was so cold . . .
pickpockets were sticking their hands in strangers' pockets just to keep them warm!

It was so cold . . .
the squirrels in the park were throwing themselves at an electric fence!

It was so cold . . .
I chipped a tooth on my soup!

It was so cold . . .
the dogs were wearing cats!

It was so cold . . .
I actually enjoyed it when someone spilled scalding hot coffee on my lap!

It was so cold . . .
Levi Strauss started manufacturing electric jeans!

It was so cold . . .
the rats were bribing the alley cats for a snuggle.

It was so cold . . .
we had to chop up the piano for firewood - but we only got two chords.

It was so cold . . .
we had to carry around hammers and chisels so we could get out of our parkas!

It was so cold . . .
the politicians had their hands in their OWN pockets!

It was so cold...
Mr. Bumstead's toupee took off and migrated south!

It was so cold . . .
words froze in the air. If you wanted to hear what someone said, you had to grab a handful of sentences and take them in by the fire!

It was so cold . . .
the dogs had to put jumper cables on the rabbits - just to get them running!

It was so cold . . .
Playboy magazine stopped publishing because no women would take their clothes off.

It was so cold . . .
we pulled everything out of the freezer and huddled inside it to warm up!

It was so cold . . .
the Husky Association was making emergency service calls to get the dog teams started! Then...

It was so cold . . .
when we parked the sled, we either had to plug in the dogs - or keep them running in place!

Sourdough,
After reading your posts about the cold weather in North Pole, I bookmarked a weather website and watch your weather there every day. That place gets cold beyond anything I have experienced.  This morning when it was showing in the +30's in North Pole and -21F here I was rapping on my computer screen to see if something was wrong.   ;D ;D

Cold and windy. Hardest winter we've had in five or six years. -30F this morning, with 20mph winds, an unusual combination that is most unwelcome.

I enjoyed the post. Did you do all that typing just too keep the fingers warm? ;)

Heather
With those kids I would think you would say warm just keeping em herded up.
It has been an unusal cold snap here, low 40's early morning amid 50's during the day but humidity is so low it is not noticable.
Usually our northers come with 60/70 percent humidity and 40 feels like 20/30.

Keep the fires going, cuddle up with your mate and stay warm.

My favorite writer is Robert Service - an Englishman who spent a lot of time in the frozen north.  Reading some of the posts here today about cold weather reminded me of this one.  Hope I didn't paste something too long.  If so, sorry.

The Cremation of Sam McGee
There are strange things done in the midnight sun
By the men who moil for gold;
The Arctic trails have their secret tales
That would make your blood run cold;
The Northern Lights have seen queer sights,
But the queerest they ever did see
Was that night on the marge of Lake Lebarge
I cremated Sam McGee.

Now Sam McGee was from Tennessee,
Where the cotton blooms and blows.
Why he left his home in the South to roam
'Round the Pole, God only knows.
He was always cold, but the land of gold
Seemed to hold him like a spell;
Though he'd often say in his homely way
That he'd "sooner live in hell".

On a Christmas Day we were mushing our way
Over the Dawson trail.
Talk of your cold! through the parka's fold
It stabbed like a driven nail.
If our eyes we'd close, then the lashes froze
Till sometimes we couldn't see;
It wasn't much fun, but the only one
To whimper was Sam McGee.

And that very night, as we lay packed tight
In our robes beneath the snow,
And the dogs were fed, and the stars o'erhead
Were dancing heel and toe,
He turned to me, and "Cap," says he,
"I'll cash in this trip, I guess;
And if I do, I'm asking that you
Won't refuse my last request."

Well, he seemed so low that I couldn't say no;
Then he says with a sort of moan:
"It's the cursed cold, and it's got right hold
Till I'm chilled clean through to the bone.
Yet 'tain't being dead -- it's my awful dread
Of the icy grave that pains;
So I want you to swear that, foul or fair,
You'll cremate my last remains."

A pal's last need is a thing to heed,
So I swore I would not fail;
And we started on at the streak of dawn;
But God! he looked ghastly pale.
He crouched on the sleigh, and he raved all day
Of his home in Tennessee;
And before nightfall a corpse was all
That was left of Sam McGee.

There wasn't a breath in that land of death,
And I hurried, horror-driven,
With a corpse half hid that I couldn't get rid,
Because of a promise given;
It was lashed to the sleigh, and it seemed to say:
"You may tax your brawn and brains,
But you promised true, and it's up to you
To cremate those last remains."

Now a promise made is a debt unpaid,
And the trail has its own stern code.
In the days to come, though my lips were dumb,
In my heart how I cursed that load.
In the long, long night, by the lone firelight,
While the huskies, round in a ring,
Howled out their woes to the homeless snows --
O God! how I loathed the thing.

And every day that quiet clay
Seemed to heavy and heavier grow;
And on I went, though the dogs were spent
And the grub was getting low;
The trail was bad, and I felt half mad,
But I swore I would not give in;
And I'd often sing to the hateful thing,
And it hearkened with a grin.

Till I came to the marge of Lake Lebarge,
And a derelict there lay;
It was jammed in the ice, but I saw in a trice
It was called the "Alice May".
And I looked at it, and I thought a bit,
And I looked at my frozen chum;
Then "Here," said I, with a sudden cry,
"Is my cre-ma-tor-eum."

Some planks I tore from the cabin floor,
And I lit the boiler fire;
Some coal I found that was lying around,
And I heaped the fuel higher;
The flames just soared, and the furnace roared --
Such a blaze you seldom see;
And I burrowed a hole in the glowing coal,
And I stuffed in Sam McGee.

Then I made a hike, for I didn't like
To hear him sizzle so;
And the heavens scowled, and the huskies howled,
And the wind began to blow.
It was icy cold, but the hot sweat rolled
Down my cheeks, and I don't know why;
And the greasy smoke in an inky cloak
Went streaking down the sky.

I do not know how long in the snow
I wrestled with grisly fear;
But the stars came out and they danced about
Ere again I ventured near;
I was sick with dread, but I bravely said:
"I'll just take a peep inside.
I guess he's cooked, and it's time I looked"; . . .
Then the door I opened wide.

And there sat Sam, looking cool and calm,
In the heart of the furnace roar;
And he wore a smile you could see a mile,
And he said: "Please close that door.
It's fine in here, but I greatly fear
You'll let in the cold and storm --
Since I left Plumtree, down in Tennessee,
It's the first time I've been warm."

There are strange things done in the midnight sun
By the men who moil for gold;
The Arctic trails have their secret tales
That would make your blood run cold;
The Northern Lights have seen queer sights,
But the queerest they ever did see
Was that night on the marge of Lake Lebarge
I cremated Sam McGee.

Right now it's -13F and here is the prediction for tonight on Weather Underground:

Tonight
Mostly clear. Near record or record low around 31 below. West wind 10 to 15 mph. Wind chill readings to 49 below.

-15 in NE Indiana this AM at 3:00 and the sky is clear - I can see stars. It has dropped 4 degrees in the last hour. It usually dips a little lower before dawn - the prediction is -20. It does not compare to Sourdough's postings, but dang cold for around here. I would post the lowest temp - but I have to go to work now - It is awful early and 10 hour days are long.
