sad but then again, anyone who takes an open flame to an unknown muzzle loader is just asking for trouble. You would have thunk that they would have been smart enough to check and see if the rifle was loaded.

Cant always be there to lead people by the hand and set them in the right direction. Common sense has to kick in sometime.

Muzzle pointed in a safe direction and gun is always loaded would have saved this man's life even if they were stupid.

I always teach my grandchildren that the first thing you do is verify its unloaded....and then treat it as if it was.  My Dad alway said there was no unloaded gun..........

You know, if the anti's out there would concentrate their efforts to education things could get a lot better. Hunter education has been linked to a downslide in hunting accidents, and kids taught the rules will always fair better in a variety of situations. not only hunting, but at friends' and relatives homes where they could encounter un-supervised firearms. I personally think gun safety should be taught in public schools as part of the regular acedemics.

I'm not saying any amount of teaching would have saved this guy from self destruction but, 4 basic rules you know......   ::)

The only thing that stops me from commenting on this is the fact that the poor guy died and left a wife & kids w/o a father.

Very tragic and obviously avoidable. I think I'll mention this story in my next Hunter Safety Class.
