Info. on 357 and 44 mag. acc. barrels. UPDATE THIS MORNING
« on: January 15, 2009, 10:12:35 AM »
Just an update on Quick's earlier post on the subject.
I just got off the phone with Kirsten at H&R customer service and she said they WILL fit 357 and 44 mag acc. barrels to any 1987 OR NEWER SB1 frames.
She also said that these are the only rifle barrels they will fit to SB1 frames.

I hope she is right and understood the question, so in other words, the same criteria for fitting any other barrel!

 Thanks Spanky!

I hope she knows what she is talking about too. :D
I asked her specifically what years were eligible and she said any SB1 from 1987 on.
I also asked if there would be any difference's with the acc. barrels compared to the combo barrels and she told me they will be the same.

Did you happen to ask her when 44mag barrels would actually be available?  I've been waiting on one for 4 months now.  Good thing I was in no hurry.  However my patients are beginning to wear.

8 weeks wait on my .44mag here :(

I sent in my SB2 for a huntsman .50, 30-06, and .44mag.  I got the word that all three were back ordered when I called, so I canceled the .50 and bought one here, and waiting on the  30-06 (got fitted this week) and the .44mag (still waiting).

I figure the huntsman on my SB1 frame my dad bought me when I was 10 (87 frame) would keep me happy while I wait.  I just need to find a straight cammo lam stock for the thing, my thumb hole and monte carlo are too tall for open sights.

OK guys, I called customer service again this morning to check on availabilty of 357 and 44 mag barrels.
I spoke to a man named Elijiah and he told me that neither barrel was in stock right now.

He could not give me an exact date as to when they would be available but said they plan on starting to fill orders in "early Spring"

Not exactly the answer I was hoping for but better than nothing I guess. :-\

He did also confirm what Kirsten told me yesterday in that all frames (SB1 and SB2) made from 1987 on are eligible for these two barrels.

Looks like the wait for them will be a little longer guys.

I'm glad to hear this. I built a stubbed .357 on a SB1 frame this summer, but I only shot .38's and mild .357 handloads. I always felt it could take a full blown .357, but I just didn't want to push my luck. I'll probably still shoot my light loads for varmints and such, but I think I'm going to have to work up a deer load this summer now that I know for certain that the frame can take it.

Thanks for posting the information.

starting to fill orders in "early Spring"
That's ridiculous.  I'll be adding my "not happy" vote to the Ilion satisfaction poll when/if I ever get my barrels.  If a product is not available it should be removed from there website or noted as "out of stock" like many other companies do.  I guess I should have called before I placed the order but I assumed it was available since it was listed.  I guess we all know what assume does.  I am tempted to call and cancell my order.  I guess I will let it ride since I have waited this long.  I wonder how many people have been waiting longer than I have?

XxLT250RxX - Waiting for barrels to be come available is nothing new. This happened when it was H&R owned by Marlin. They do not have barrels in continuous production. They set up and make runs. When they set up, they figure out how many barrels they have on order, how many they want to to put on frames to sell and add in a number that they think will sell in the future over a certain period of time. They make their run and fill orders make their guns for sale and have some barrels setting around for sale at a later date. If they misjudged the demand for the barrels or more guns were sold than planned, they will pull from their stock of "over runs". They are then out of barrels for sale and possibly whole guns too. They then schedule in another run for these barrels. Depending on where they are at with other barrels, it can take a few months to get them in line to be produced. It is really a guessing game with them. If a particular barrel or gun is more popular than they figured, they are just going to run out. I think the 357 and newer 44 mag barrels have become much more popular than they figured to start with. A while back (when Marlin was the owner) when I got my 357 barrel, I really wanted a 44 mag barrel, but they were out. They did have 357 barrels in stock, so I got one of those instead. As it turned out, I got the 44 mag as a whole rifle later and it had the tighter bore. I would have got the 44 mag barrel and skipped over the 357 had they had the 44 Mags in stock, and the 44 mag would have been an over bore proposition. It worked out good for me. I did call first, before sending in my frame to make sure they had what I wanted in stock. Good Luck - Patience is a virtue.

I called H&R this morning and spoke to a fellow. I wanted to see if they
received my frame yet for fitting a 357 Mag Barrel. He said it is was not in
the system yet, so he couldn't be sure if it arrived yet. Oh well. (Note to self:
Next time you send a frame into H&R to get a new barrel fitted make sure to
pay a couple of bucks extra get a confirmation of delivery. Less guess work
and hassle!)
I also asked him if they had any 357 mag barrels in stock. He checked
and came back to me and said they did, however it all depends on how
many orders for 357 Mag barrels were in front of me as to weather they
still had them available by the time they started working on my frame.
For example, if you are #20 in line to get a 357 Mag barrel installed on
your frame and they only have 15 ea. 357 Mag barrels, and by the way,
he had no idea exactly how many they had in stock or how many orders
there were for 357 Mag barrels ahead of me. There for, I have the
potential to be S.O.L. until more 357 Mag barrels come in, whenever
that is. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best. I sure
would like to see a better system in place here for the barrel accessory
program. (Better and faster communication with the customer. Faster
acquisition of barrels that are out of stock! 3 or 4 months for them to
get a particular barrel in stock so that they can fit it on your frame?
That is 100% unacceptable and 150% in my opinion. In this day and age with
all the unemployed machinists in the country that are more than willing
to work, that the supplier either doesn't have the people capable of doing the work or enough orders to fire up the equipment and crank out the barrels necessary to fill these orders? You have got to be kidding me!) I'll get off of my soapbox now 'cause I know they just moved and things take time to settle in and work smoothly. I will try to stay positive and have patience with them.
It ain't easy though!

Bob,

Do you happen to know the name of the CS rep. you spoke to?
I also called this morning and was told that neither barrel was available right now :-\

If they do have some 357's available now I might take a chance and send my frame in.

Sorry Spanky. I don't recall the fellow's name that I spoke to today.
The last time I called, before I sent my frame off, I spoke to a nice
lady who told me the same thing. That 357 Mag barrels were still
available.
