New bolt action rifle
« on: January 16, 2009, 01:31:50 AM »
I am thinking of getting a new bolt action rifle for deer hunting and informal target shooting chambered in 7-08.
The choice is a brand new Weatherby Vanguard blue and synthetic stock or a lightly used Remington model 7, blue and walnut stock.
I already have a M700 in 35W and just looking for a more compact and lighter rifle.
The absolute maximum range I would fire it at would be 300 yards.

thanks

Both are very nice rifles, but if "compact" is your primary goal, I'd probably go with the M7. I like the Vanguards and think they are a better all-around rifle design in terms of general use, but it's awfully hard to beat an M7 for your intended purpose. I own both a 673 (.350RM) and an M7 (.300 SAUM).

I've shot my 7mm Mag to 600yds with the 130gr bullet. So if you are thinking about a 7mm the 7mm Mag can do it. Mine is a 700 action Rem.

I absolutely love my Tikka T3 .308 Stainless Light rifle.  Shoot under an inch with no work not even trigger work like the Remmy's.  It's short and light.  Bolt is smooth.  If I remember correctly it weighs 6.25 empty.  In fact I added weight to mine for stand hunting and range shooting.  I'll take it out for walking.  Pick what you want... we won't make fun of you either way!!!

I believe the Weatherby Vanguard is made by Howa (a huge Japanese firearms co.) that makes a good quality rifle.  Most will shoot 1.5 MOA with factory ammo right out of the box.

The Remington Model 7 is also a quality rifle, but the barrel is pretty thin, and with the 18.5 or the 20 inch barrels, alot of them will only shoot 2.0 to 2.5 MOA out of the box with factory ammo. They also heat up pretty quickly, so after 2 or 3 shots, they will walk .  Also, because they are so short, they are butt heavy, and do not point worth a damn. (Yea, I hunted with one for 5 years.  Great for hunting from a tree stand at fairly close range, out to 125 yards.)

If getting the lightest and handiest rifle possible is your objective, then get the Remington Model 7.  If you are just looking for a good quality "lighter" rifle, then get the Vanguard.  (You can always make it "handier" by cutting 1/2 inch off of the buttstock, and having the barrel cut and crowned back to 21 or 21.5 inches.  I have done this with other full size hunting rifles, and it makes them amazingly quick and handy!)

And, if you are looking for the most inexpensive, best bargain, most accurate rifle out of the box, with a synthetic stock, then skip the Vanguard, and get a Stephens 200 synthetic stocked rifle (which is the same rifle as the Savage 111, but without the accutrigger, and with a grey colored stock instead of a black one.)  You can find these for as little as $280!!!

  Just some thoughts.

ragnar,
Like you, I owned and was not pleased with the handling qualities of my Remington Model 7. I am a still hunter and select my rifles depending  on how well they point, shoulder and balance for offhand shooting. I went to the Ruger Model 77 RSI. I have one in .308 Win, and they are presently offering it in 7mm-08. This is my favorite rifle insofar as handling qualities, and I own many rifles. It is light, very well balanced, and shoots and handles second to none with any of the following; its factory irons, OEM peep (NECG) or scopes.

To me, the Weatherby and Howa rifles are a great buy, just a little bigger and heavier than I want for still hunting.
Good luck

If you are willing to put up with the weight and heft of the Vanguard, there are tons of good choices.  I'd buy something American made if at all possible.

If you want a compact rifle there are not many choices.

Of the two, I would choose the Remington. Its a good one and in this caliber will suit you well.

The Rem. M7.  The Vanguards current stock is a dog.  It was made, years ago, with a decent stock but now it's heavy, bulky, trigger is a real PITA to adjust.  M7 is a sweetheart.

I would have to go with the mod 7 in 7/08. The Rifle and cartridge seem to be mad for one another.
