Disc Extreme question
« on: January 16, 2009, 08:12:06 AM »
I am considering buying a Knight Disc Extreme.  No doubt in my mind about accuracy and craftsmanship but am wondering how dirty the action gets after several shots.  Is there much blowback or does it stay clean?  Are they worth messing with the primer carriers?  Thanks to all in advance.

I mostly shoot the 'Original Disc' though I do own an Extreme & have seen my partner clean his Extreme after firing it. I do know mine does have some black residue in the bolt area from any propellant I shoot, even B209. I am not familiar enough to say if the Extreme is much cleaner. I just lump it in to part of dealing & shooting a M-L.

I will say that when set up & ready to go on the stand I am very content holding my Knight M-L. I just give it a good cleaning after shooting it & leave a light coat of oil on everything in the off season. I don't mess with any special primer carriers, just a few pre-loaded 'discs' in a little plastic baggy.

Denny...I have an original Disc, it's the only inline I own and it's a very well built rifle...
Some don't like the Discs (my uses the orange instead of the red), but I actually do...
My buddies own other makes and I have a hard time getting that dang 209 in place...If nothing else, the Disc solves that problem...

The Extreme Disc seals better than the Original Disc that I have and I don't have problems with the action getting too dirty to function...

Denny, I have a DISC Elite which I think is the exact same action as the Extreme. I have both breach plugs (the one that uses DISCs and the one that uses just the 209 primer). For both, I don't think there is much of any fouling from the propellent, rather I think it may be from the primer. The breachplug that uses just the 209 primers is very clean. The DISCs have some primer fouling, but not that much. I find that I like using the DISC because they are easier for me  to handle. I have a plastic tube that I fill with primed DISCs, other tubes with pre-measured powder charges, and others with sabboted bullets. I really like the rifle and would recommend it to anyone.

Thanx for the insights, folks.  When I said primer carriers, I was referring to the discs.  I had a 45 Black Diamond XR SS and it was the best shooting ML I have owned, however, it was also the dirtiest!!  Musket caps actually scorched my fingers.  Just don't want to get back into THAT again   ;D.

I have a Knight Elite, an Extreme and a Wolverine.
all three use the red primer jackets for 209 primers.
I can shoot all three rifles all day long with some residue build up around the breech plug/bolt area but not to the detriment of shooting.
It cleans up easily. I do protect the bottom of my scopes from primer flash with some black electrical tape.
Those are three very nice muzzleloaders. Too bad Knight decided not keep them in production. IMHO, that was their mistake.
