A bit of info needed
« on: January 16, 2009, 11:41:34 AM »
Can anyone tell me the name that is used for the two big eyebolts on the rearmost step on a stepped navel carriage ? - They are often angled and were fixed to two ropes and block and tackle for traversing the carriage on board a ship ?

Best way is to let you read the parts list as used by the US Navy.  For the ordinary truck carriage there seem to have been a total of four eye-bolts with three different functions.  I didn't look at where they are but the book probably shows it.

I had to zoom in to make out the markings on the illustration, but they are:

"5. Two side-tackle eye-bolts."

Two c1865 contemporary texts both refer to them simply as eye-bolts on the lowest steps of the bracket. An earlier diagram with every iron part named is reproduced in A. Caruana's "History of English Sea Ordnance 1523 - 1875 Vol II" but these two eye-bolts are not present & are mainly a later addition it appears.

Many thanks for the info.
I like to know what the bits of my builds are called.
