9.3 X 57
« on: January 16, 2009, 01:38:02 PM »
I have a commercial M-96 swede built by Husqvarna. I got the barreled action in a trade a few years back. Had it re-blued and restocked it in the traditional German early style with the side panels. OK Has anybody on this forum actually taken any game with this caliber? I know it approaches the 358 winchester in power, trajectory, etc. Just want to know if anybody has used it in a real game situation.  Mike

Approaches the 358 in power? I would think that it goes past it. The case should hold more powder.

My  load is the Speer 270 gr semi spitzer bullet with W748 powder for about 2060 fps, I form the cases using Remington 8 X 57 cases and lube the inside of the case mouth and run into the size die for a perfectly sized 9.3 X 57 case. Simple. Awesome cartridge. ;D

I bought one 9,3x57-then another one because it had a norma peep sight-then another one,not sure why but I liked it,you get a lot of gun for the money with these swedes, and very fine workmanship as a bonus....I'm using  286 gr Privipartizans with 47 gr of IMR 4064,should hit like the hammer of THOR.Resizing 8 x57 as well, not to dificult-but I had to remember to get the shoulder right-some of mine wouldn't chamber.Due to the factory loaded Norma being hard to obtain here -I ended up reloading.Swedish gunboards has lots of good information

Got a ton of Norma brass when I got the action. Just curious about anybody using one in a hunting situation. I want to use it on elk this year. Mine has a Lyman 48 peep on it. As I get older I'm really attracted to open sight and {obsolete} caliber. Guess I have taken enough game with the more modern stuff. that the simplicity of open sights and slow big bullets is really intriguing me

occasionally you can find one with a norma or Helqvist peep sight-I bought  a 9,3x57-just because it had one.I figure that combination is the ideal for a short-medium range hunting rifle- and loaded with 286 gr Privipartizans should make for a fine black bear rifle-spring bear opens shortly and I'm going to see how my theory works out on Vancouver Island bears

For any of you Canadian types, there is a company in Quebec( they actually advertise in English!!)that has a large number of Mausers and some Huskies in 6.5x55 , 9,3 x 57, 9,3X63 and the Swiss 7.5 something or rather for reasonable money.

After a 4 year wait I finally got drawn for a elk tag in my home state of Arizona. Gonna get to try out the 9.3. I'm stoked!

Well I have seen the husky 9.3x57 but never seen any one that has dies. There seems to be no listing with Lee, RCBS , redding etc.

Hornady makes dies in 9.3x57. They have a tapered expander as well to make necking up 8x57 brass a bit easier. Or so I`ve heard, I have 100 factory 9.3x57 cases , so I`ve never actually tried re-sizing 8mm brass. I`m loading IMR3031 under 250gr TSX`s, never shot anything but paper with them though.

Thank for the heads up Jim . I know where there is a 9.3x57 but not the dies . imported ammo would be costly otherwise.

Norma has ammunition but at $50 a box its pricey.Reloading is the only viable option-and I also ran 8x57 shells through a Hornady die-not dificult.I'm using 4064 and 286 privi partizans

I just picked up a nice older M-8 Leupold 4X in excellent condition for my last 9.3X57.That makes my total investment $350 for a very fine moose/bear rifle and scope.I admit getting a bit of a chuckle over detractors who say it is a ''short range'' 200 yard rifle-I suggest there isn't going to a lot of animals still standing after a solid hit from 286 gr of soft lead moving at a very modest 2000 fps-especially   since a long shot is likely going to be 50 yards.Nor do I feel the slightest bit hampered by my fixed power 4x Leupold....No matter how you call it-thats about the best value on the market  in a large game rifle that takes second place to nothing on the rack -and has been doing so for a long time

A very interesting cartridge, but it seems underloaded. Why shouldn't an optimally loaded 9.3x57 mm with 250 grain bullets achieve the same MV as a .358 Win. with 250 grain bullets, to wit, about 2,400 fps?

Nosler, Barnes and I think Woodleigh make 250 grain bullets  in .366".

The m94/96 actions are not as strong as the m98, and that's the reasons why the cartridges are a bit soft loaded. However, this cartridge has a revival in Scandinavia, and Blaser now is making 9,3x57 barrels for the R97 rifle. It is considered one of the best cartridges for moose, bear and hog. The recoil is soft, but the heavy bullet punches a large hole through the game, killing it efficiently.

Just saw the add for tradeexcanada  and they seem to have a good supply of 9.3x57 rifles on hand . The dies are pricey.
There is not a lot of data on this cartridge(none I found) and it might be intersting how they shoot , since they are called a potato thrower . So how high is your site picture out to 200 yards ?

What do you trim the brass to?  as for interst- Any information would be of help.

Tradex is where I bought mine and Anthony is a great guy to deal with. There is a guy in the US that has a good supply of them as well though if getting it over the border is a hassle. As for pricey dies, I can only imagine, I paid close to $90 Canadian two years ago for mine. Sammi (or however its spelled) spec is 2.224" case length. I haven't been able to find any load data either (at least not for powders commonly available in North America). I did get a recommendation on another sight to use 358 Win max loads -5% as a starting load and it has worked well for me. USE THIS INFORMATION AT YOUR OWN RISK. Also keep in mind that I am loading for an M98 not an M96 or 94.

Thank for the info Jim.
I see his rifles are rated from dark through to very good to excellent . Would a good to very good bore have good rifling with out pits ? Some older guns which I have traveled to see rated very good had rounded off rifling and or rust in the bore. The pictures are not very big and need to order site unseen.

Yep the 9.3x57 dies are still that cheap.

Recoil is soft? I built mine to match a german sporter of the era and weighs about six pounds. I load a fairly stiff combo, and I can tell you the recoil gets your attention off the bench. I wanted it light, for a good walking about rifle. Mine has no scope and carries the original sights plus a Lyman 57.It recoils at the bench as fully as my CZ Model 550 in 375 H&H. That's the price you pay for a light rifle.

Just call or e-mail Anthony, he will give you all the details you want on a particular gun and e-mail you additional pictures as well. Also if you click on the pics on his site, they enlarge if I recall correctly. Mine was described as excellent bore and it is. In fact the gun was exactly as decribed. Montreal is 6 hrs one way from here, so I bought mine sight unseen.

Try Allan's Armory he's a sponsor on the gunboards.com and grades his barrels very conservatory. And on the same site check out their scandanavian forums. Swedish mausers and many husky rifles. And tried and trusted load data. Think you will enjoy this web site. Frank

Anthony  is known for understating the condition of his rifles,I have always been very pleasently surprised when I got one-its always been better than he said it was-and when he says a barrel is ''excellent'' -it really is.Along with the very fine workmanship on the swedes, they generally have very nice walnut stocks too.Spend a couple of hours on one of them cleaning, oiling , rubbing and polishing and you have a rifle hard to beat at any price

It is always nice to get a referance on some one you do not know . Until last week , I was not aware that this firm exsisted , and it is great to find some nice rifles of years past still for sale .

So by word of mouth things get done , and I just passed on the information to a friend whom seemed very intersted. I will certainly look also , when the $$$ is not so tight.

Ahhh well it started off with an illness then we had a spot of ISP problems followed with the vitual demise of my IBM, the new equipment supplied by the ISP is incompatable with my old PC so we started to gather the bits so build a new puter but that project has taken a life all of it's own. The finance keeps slipping away  ::) as I keep finding more shooting stuff to buy. I will try to get in touch using Mothers PC until we can get my new one finished.

Too bad you are so far away. Matt has a couple hundred or more computers in my barn that while certainly not the most modern are still fully functional and useable computers. I think most are P2 or P3 but some are P4s. Still kinda old tech but better than many of our members use for sure. He used to have a pretty good local market to sell them but his deal with the place he left them to sell fell thru so I'm stuck with them taking up space in my barn.

I seem to recall the last we sold was $100 plus shipping but I'd sure not wanna take on the task of legally shipping one out of country. He keeps promising to make them go away but never seems to get his "round tuit".

Brithunter:  Glad you came up for air and posted again.  I have found your post of interest.  Thought you might have setup your own site in G.B. or bite the dust.  Good to see your post.

Model 46 husqvarna's

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

“Husqvarna Vapenfabriks also made commercial M94-96 versions available as sporting rifles called Model 46 and its variants (mod.46A, 46AN and 46B) in calibres 6.5x55, 9.3x57 and 9.3x62. After World War II they used the M96/M38 action without thumb notch and called it Model 640 (646 - 6.5x55, 648 - 8x57, 649 - 9.3x62) - not to be confused with the late production model number 640 which were using FN Herstal M98 actions. Stiga of Sweden made sporterized versions in popular calibres. These rifles are very well finished and balanced”

Thanks all,

Ahhh GB the new puter will be almost up to date, Dual core proesseor, not sure of clock speed. I thought the machine it's based on just needed a new HD but it seems that the newer HD's caused a conflict so I new MB was purchased and it went downhill from there. Seems that they changed the internal connections to SATA from IDE and now I need all new drives  ::) except the Floppy that is and that was after the new power pack. By the time we get down the only old bits will be the case and floppy disc drive. next to get is the new HD to replace the other new HD but one with SATA connections and an OS.
