I got 3 of the 7mm-08s and they are great!  They are a bit faster than the 7x57 Mauser, unless you handload, that has been taking game for over 100 years and not to far behind a 280 rem.  And I got 3 of them as well, so I know what they will do.  308 is a wonderful cartridge, the 7mm08 is that case necked down and using a bullet with good BC and bullet weight for most anything hunted in the lower 48.  Mild recoil, good reach and proven ability to take game, what else do ya need?  DP

:) It has been said "the only way to improve on the 308 is to make it a 7mm-08" !  It is an excellent choice

for your 10 year old son & could serve as the only HP rifle he would need for a life time.  The gun store

expert & his buddies are just plain wrong !  Go with your instincts, enjoy, & don't look back !  JMHO :) Jim

I am a big 25-06 fan & a 308 fan as well, but the boys in the gun shop do not know what they are talking about, I mean it makes ZERO sense.  :o

As far as a pure Whitetail rig is concerned (and not just for kids), the 7-08 is as good as it gets. They are showing their ignorance.  ::)

Everything else being equal I would go in the order of 308.....7mm-08......25-06.
Actually I could think of another three between the 7mm08 and the 25-06.

While there are other rounds perhaps as good as the 7-08 for a deer rifle THERE ARE NONE BETTER. Anyone who tells you otherwise is merely showing their ignorance. The .25-06 is one of those "almost" as good but doesn't quite get there. It's a fine round and for a long range antelope/deer round it's fine but for a take them anywhere and any size deer rifle it doesn't quite come up to the same level as the 7-08.

The round you have chosen to use is my preferred deer hunting round as well. I've tried others and of them it is the best so far. Buy it and rest assured those who scoff are BS'ers not hunters.

I to am a fan of the 7/08.  As I've noted before, my only synthetic stocked rifle is an old M7 in 7/08 that is and has been my official backup rifle whenever I go hunting.  A great deer cartridge!

i learned a long ago that some ''salemen or women'' have no idea what they are doing. 7-08 is a good rifle or pistol.

I see the smilley face which means you are kidding. I'm glad because otherwise I would have to say this comment would be no better than the one the gun shop clowns made. So, I take it in good humor.

The 7-08 is a great round and so is the 25-06. I've got a 7-08. The 139gr LM load should work ok. I don't use max loads and the deer don't seem to realize it.  ;)

First of all thanks to all for their replies and thanks to Mr.Graybeard for this site,I've not been here long but have found it very helpful with tons of information.

In reference to that gun store I believe that it was in hopes of making a quick sale of a .308 which they had in stock as against the 08 which they didn't,about a week after that they tried something shady with my boy,but that's a whole different story.

Thanks to all,

Tim

Tim, I figure that is probably the case. Many times I have gone into a gunshop or other type of store for that matter
& inquire about a certain item & wouldn't you know it, they try to sell me something diff. because they don't have what I asked for, but do have what they are advising me to buy. That can really get me going!!  >:(

I said it before and I'll say it again, the 7-08 is one of the most practical deer rounds out there. And in a pinch, I wouldn't hesitate running a 160 Nosler Partition in it for Elk at modest range.
If that's what you want, don't let anybody talk you out of it. You might be sorrier if you do, than that fella in the gun shop loosing a sale.

I just picked up a 280 barrel for my NEF. Knowing that I could load it down into the 7-08 range. Ive never shot a 7-08 but according to the books its rigt up there, almost to the 280. What I would do is have a pocket full of cash, Walk into the store, tell them the gun you want . Count out the money, then say OH yeah Im gonna go to another store & spend my money. Thanks for nothing.  Immature yes. But it will make you feel better. & maybe they will get the point. Hope your son enjoys his new rifle Jay
I dont care what gun Im using as long as Im hunting

a few years ago I bought a "cheap" Rem 700 sps 7-08, mounted a Nikon Monarch2x7. The rifle shoots 1/2 groups at 100 yds. I have yet to have a deer run more than 25 yards after being hit. 7-08 is a great round.
Some years ago a salesman talked me into buying a 30-06 in a Rem 700 mountain rifle. The cartridge was just too much for such a light gun. I think he couldn't sell the gun and he sold me a bill of goods.

Coleman,

I got a 7mm-08 for my son as well even though he is an adult.  All I used to talk about when my kid was young was my .358 Winchesters for woods deer.  He wanted one but when he shot it the recoil was just too much.

He has a Kimber Montana  Classic now and what with those soft Decelerator pads they come with the recoil is nominal.

For your son you need to consider the LOP for him now if he is only 10 and that may mean cutting some stock or getting a short stock for the rifle now.

Even then I favor rifles with M70 type safeties that allow locking the bolt closed and and the firing pin as well if the gun is dropped by accident and that safety being able to lock the firing pin even when the bolt is opened to unload the chamber of a hot round.

Good luck.

I've harvested a goodly percentage of the deer I've tagged using my 25-06 and it is a good round though my rifle does not like the heavier bullets. Even so, my son's 7-08, mild as it seems on the bench, continues to impress me with its performance on whitetail and I used it in a pinch on elk where it got the job done. For beginner/rookie shooters I also like the heavier bullets in the 7-08 over the lighter bullets of the 257.

I've been using a 7-08 24 years and it is my favorite over my other guns, 30-06, 270wsm, 270, 25-06,  300win mag. I have three 7-08s and my biggest decision is which one of the 7-08s I'll take. Get the 7-08 and don't listen to those, even though they are good ole boys.

I've been using one since 1983, and you can't get a better whitetail cartridge, regardless of what the experts at the local gunshop say. Get one, you won't be sorry. :)

I also just bought a Browning 7-08 for my wife. I handload for everything I shoot. Can someone recomend a selection of good bullets/weights for whitetails weighing from 100-200+ lbs?  I have started her with light (starting) loads and 120 Ballistic Tips. I'd like to work her up slowly to more powder/bullet weight.  Thanks for your help!

I've shot just about every bullet weight up to 160, and I keep coming back to the 140 gr. for whitetails. That's what the cartridge was designed around (I guess they knew what they were doing). :)

the last buck that I killed was with my fathers 7-08. I was with him because he is getting up there in years but still enjoys time in the woods. The buck came in at 100 yards or so and my dad couldn't see him. So he handed me the rifle and I had to lean almost out of the blind. Bang deer dropped dead, it wasn't till then I even realized that the stock wasn't even in my shoulder. This same 7-08 got my dad a 6x6 elk 2 years ago...... great cartridge

Yep, Im in there with these guys.  I have remington model 7's. Every year me, my family or friends all us these rifles.  I load and shoot 139-140gr bullets.  I have never seen or heard of any deer hit goin more than 10-15 yards.  I have shoot deer at 200 yards and dropped them in there tracks.  I have seven deer rifles and these two are my favorites.  I have always found the guys knocking the 7'08s have never shot the a 7'08.  Great deer cartridge!!!

I've never shot any 7 mm but I have always been intrigued with the 7-08.  Reading up on it over the years, it just seems to have a lot of good things going for it. One friend just bought a Browning Youth bolt for his boy and we mostly hunt moose and caribou.  Another good friend in MT just bought his 12 yr daughter a Rem SPS in 7-08 - and this guy is mighty savvy, used to shoot competition in VA as a kid. I have a son, soon to be 11 yrs and have thought hard about a 7-08 for him.

My one reason I might go to 308 is that I already load 30-30, 30-06 and 300 Win mag. It would keep the components a little simpler to stay w 30 cal. And, as I say we have only moose, caribou and brown bears so a little fatter bullet might be slightly better.

But that doesn't reduce the appeal of the 7-08.  These days with the bronze bullets and fancier powders, it doesn't give up much to the 30's and could be much more pleasant to shoot with lighter bullets available for plinking.

ANYTHING 30-30 and up will kill a deer if you do your part and NOTHING will kill a deer if you don't. I don't have a 7-08 but lot's of guys i respect do and I hear nothing but good things about it. If you're looking for a real comfortable stool that won't bother your back after 8 hours of gossip, go see those guys at the gunshop, they're experts in that field.

I load my 7/08 with 140 gn nosler accubond with 41.5 to 42 gns Varget it is a sweet load for me every gun is different. but I'd give it a try start a little lower and work it up. i found it to be extremely accurate and shooter friendly. good out to 400yrds no problem
