Great info! Just about every "color" one would want to see their favorite cannon, howitzer, or mortar "dressed" in! Thanks, Double D! BoomLover

Just keep in mind that lead acetate is a strong poison and tastes sweet so it needs to be kept under lock and key if children are in the home.

You can bury brass under oak leaves for a few months and get a beautiful patina. After 6 months or so, it will turn a dull black.

Mike and I are building a Thank You cannon for an old Navy friend of his who did us an enormous favor recently.  So we purchased some of this Brass Patina fluid from Sculpt Noveaux Company.  We have not used it yet, but we will give you all a report when we do.  The advantage to this stuff is that it has been proven by bronze sculptors around the country and would be a little more convenient to use rather than mixing all those separate chemicals together.  All you need is some cheap latex gloves and a few cotton balls to apply this stuff.
That's it so far.  See photos below.

Regards,

Mike and Tracy

A metal cleaning fluid, several different shades of Patina and a finishing spray lacquer are included.  Cost is between $30 and $40.

A better photo of the bottles included in the package.

Smokin' my pipe on the mountings, sniffin' the mornin'-cool,
I walks in my old brown gaiters along o' my old brown mule,
With seventy gunners be'ind me, an' never a beggar forgets
It's only the pick of the Army that handles the dear little pets - 'Tss! 'Tss!

I'm FAR from being a chemist, but I thought that chlorides were responsible for "bronze disease". Would you want to patina brass or bronze with a solution containing a chloride?

it probably aint that dangerous as this is a highly limited process in time and when you achied the result you want you clean your object very carefully and seal the surface with either laquer or wax .
or maybe even both of them , then no further oxidation can happened as no oxygen can reach the surface .
so I would guess that its a safe way to do it .
Ive heard a lot of other ways to do it also , some use car battery acid and spray it twice a day until you got it as green as you want .
another man told me he used to put tho objects into an lerge pile of leafs and then he goes there and pee on it a few times a day .
the ways to do it is probably as many as the people who does it .

but I hope that more of you guys here will tell what you know about this topic .
it would be very interesting to do some experiments .

Dan, this is a very intriguing method.  I bet one of Cat Wisperer's favorite beverages would assist him in accomplishing this method.  Tim, is there a Private Peeing Place on your Property in Pulaski?   .........................................Sorry, I couldn't resist.   ;D ;D

It probably makes a difference what you've been previously drinking as to what color of finish comes out. Water, beer or wine?

maybe the urine speed up the process as it contains both chlorides and acids

oak leafs contain tannin

I have a few "Irishman" brass barrels. Getting them to patina hasn't been difficult. Go out there and shoot them once in a while, wash with water when you are done shooting, avoid polishing, and you will have very realistic "patina" in a short order with no extra effort on your part. The acidic residue from the BP will make sure of that.

DD, as much as I love my woods, your open space is beautiful! I will send a box of leaves to you in the spring when the snow melts
