High Standard Sentinel 22 - shoot shorts?
« on: January 17, 2009, 06:40:21 PM »
This was my wife's grandfather's "yard gun" that she inherited.  I never met him since he died years before we ever met (which is a shame, he sounds like a fun guy) so I don't know much about the gun (or pistols in general, I'm mostlya rifle guy). All it says on the barrel is ".22 Caliber". I found an old owners manual online and it lists this gun as shooting short, long, or long rifle.

Does that sound reasonable?  Is shooting 22 shorts out of a revolver with a long rifle chamber safe?  I've shot 22 shorts in a rifle, but the barrel is attached to the chamber in a rifle, so I'm not sure about a revolver.
If he's carrying a singleshot, don't expect a warning shot!

Yes any revolver chambered to the .22 LR will also shoot shorts and longs. These days tho LR are cheaper. Used to be they cost the most but no more.

Shoot enough shorts thru it, and that is boxes and boxes of them, and it will build a carbon ring in the chambers that will have be scrubbed out for LRs to chamber. As Graybeard said, LR are cheaper and easier to find so why mess with shorts.

Yup, it will shoot them with no problem.  I have a 6" Sentinel Double Nine and I have shot shorts threw it without any trouble.

I've fired a couple hundred 22 CB caps through my Sentinel Deluxe with no ill effect except on the critters which were in my sights.  They do tend to rebound off of really hard backstops though. Shorts may or may not rebound, I haven't experience with them.
