jro45...so I should stick to non-magnum cartridges in a Savage as it is weak?

The Savage action cannot handle a high pressure round at least in 300 Win Mag. For each barrel change the gunsmith asked me if I would like to change it to a 300 RUM until I told him it was a Savage then he knew that it could not handle the high pressure of the RUM so he put a standard barrel on it for me.

Savage chambered the 116 in a couple of Lazzeroni cartridges at one point. The Patriot, a 308 short mag from Lazzeroni opperates betwen 66,500 and 67,000 psi. The Rum will not be a problem. The Savage action is plenty strong.

FWIW,  The 110 action has been around since 1958, at one time Savage used a larger firing pin which meant a larger hole through the pin that holds the bolt head in place.
That left the sides of that pin very thin and it was very hard so it was brittle and sometime broke. When it broke the bolt head would come off.  One of my neighbors had a .338 Win.  and he had at least 1/2 a dozen of those pins break, he's call Savage and they'd send him 2 more, they'd break, he'd call again.   Savage now has reduced the size of the firing pin and the size of the hole in the pin and this has apparently solved the problem.  That's the only one I've heard of breaking that pin but I know it's a weak link and could break on the older ones.

A couple of years ago, I bought for a "now" exgirlfriend a savage 110 rifle/scope combo.  The rifle would lock up frequently.  It was next to impossible to open up the bolt after firing a round.  The problem didnt occur every shot, but averaged out to about once every 5 or 6 shots.  I tried about four different brands of ammo, because her mom was convinced that it was because I was using "fancy" ammo.  I took it to my preferred gun dealer (not where I bought it) and they were able to open it up.  They said it wasnt a safety problem, so I should be able to try it again.  After a few shots it locked up again.  After about the third time back to the shop, they said that the problem was probably the result of a defect in the chamber though no defect was visible.  Although, I know that in any production mechanical item, you will always have the occasional lemon.   What realy disappointed me, is that the dealer where I bought the rifle made us pay for the shipping.  In my opinion, that cost was between the maker and the dealer and not the consumer.  Because I had to pay for the shipping,  I determined that it was the last time that the dealer or savage would see another penny from me.  For this reason as well as others, I'll be a Marlin guy.  Ill take an XL7, thank you.

Sounds like you definately bought a bad apple.  How does your marlin shoot?  I was curious about those since they are basically a knock off of a savage between the barrel nut and trigger.  Nice thing about that XL7 is they're priced the way savages used to be.

Well, my only Marlin is my 444 at the moment.  I have my heart set on the XL7, but it is hard to justify a rifle purchase until I get back to work.  I know the XL7 borrows a lot from Savage, but I feel good about giving my money to Marlin.  When it worked, my exgirlfriends Savage in 7mm-08 was a fine shooter.  Based on reports from here and the Marlin Owners Forum website, I am convinced that Marlin Came out of the gates with a winner in the XL7.  May not yet be quite as accurate as the Savages out of the box, but they are close as far as I can judge by reports.

ya might want to get a new gunsmith if he's putting a barrel on yer gun, and doesn't know it's a savage. i think thats a important piece of information when ordering a barrel.
