Scope for Remington Model 7
« on: January 18, 2009, 11:23:05 AM »
I am looking for a new scope for my Remington Model 7 in .308. I want a compact size scope to match the rifle, Power anywhere from 4X Fixed or 2-7 range as my hunting shots in these WV hills will be no more than 150 yards.

Just curious as to what you Model 7 owners have on yours. I like the looks of the Burris Timberlines and the price is not bad as I would like to stay under $150. Some of the shotgun scopes I have seen are about the size I would like but I am not sure if the 50-75 yard Parralax setting on them would be an issue.

Let me know what you have and how it's working for you.

My wife has a Bushnell Elite 4200 1.5-6 on hers and it's as close to ideal as I've seen yet. Other scopes I've used on mine are Bushnell Elite 3200 2-7, Leupold Vari-X II 2-7, Leupold Vari-X II 1-4, Leupold Vari-X III 1.5-5 and Vari-X III 2.5-8. All have served me well.

I putt a Leupold VX-I  4-12x40 On my Model 7 predator in 243Win. It has served me really well so far.

I like what your trying to do with keeping the scope to scale w/ the model 7.  Mine is in 7mm-08 cal. and I mounted a Vari X III  2.5 x 8 on it.  To my way of thinking its near perfect.  Enough power for group shooting at 100 yards while picking out a load, and enough power for taking advantage of the caliber, yet doesn't overpower the gun.  A quick handling rig in the timber when set  on the lower powers.

If you want to stay under 150, I would recommend a Bushnell trophy 1.75-4. But I gotta tell you , I would save the extra money for the Leupold vari-x III  1.75-6. Got one on my '06 pump carbine and love it!

My 7mm-08 has had a 1.5-4.5 Weaver, a 2-8 tasco compact, a Leupold Vari X-II 1-4, and a Burris on it at different times during its life. It now wears a Leupold Vari X III 2.5-8. If I were building another Model 7, I probably would pick a 1.75-6.

Nikon Prostaff 2-7X32 or a Bushnell Banner 1.5-4.5X32 would be perfect.

An older denver redfield 2X7, when you can find them never sell a gun with a Denver redfield scope on it they are getting hard to locate.   Jim

I just purchased a Burris FFII 2-7X35MM for my Marlin 336.  I have taken it outside in the late evening and compared it with a 40 yearold El Paso Weaver 2.5x7 scope.  The old scope bagged a lot of deer over the years.

The comparison in low light on a tall spike buck at 65 yards(Nikon rangefinder) showed the Burris to be far superior.  The test was not fair because of the old technology, but that is what I had to use.

I believe the field of view at 70 yards when looking at a retaining wall was sharper with the Burris.

What I do not like about the Burris.  When looking into the scope in strong artificial light, or with the sun directly behind me I was having an issue with the strong reflection of lens coating (amber/pink) back on to the lens.  I came close to returning the scope because of this issue.  I then tried the Weaver under the same conditions.  With the sun coming in directly over the back of my shoulder there was a bright glow from the sun about the size of #4 shot.

I found the reflection from the Burris scope more disturbing.

From a physical stand point the 2-7 Burris is a bit shorter then the old Weaver.  I have not mounted it on the Marlin yet, but I plan on trying low mounts, and going to medium mounts if I have too.

I purchased the 2-7 FFII Burris based on my positive experience with my 3-9 FFII Burris.  I did not have the reflective issue with the 3-9 FFII.  In my search I passed on the 2-7 Nikon at a lower price because the parallax is set at 75-yards.  I passed on a new Meade Weaver 2.5-7 because I did not received a reply back from the new Weaver owners if they would honor the warranty on a Meade Weaver.  I almost ordered the Bushnell Elite 3200 2-7 but the price was $40 dollars more.  It may have been the better investment.

I could not find a Bushnell Legend to take a look at.

I would like to thank the local deer herd for hanging out in the yard and allowing me to get a field view of deer on the far side of my crosshairs.  They looked good when I used the Burris in shaded conditions.  I still have issues with the light reflections.  If I was to buy another scope this week I would be looking at a different product.

Pentax makes a Lightseeker compact variable. It's more than $150, but well worth the extra money.

Thank Y'all for the input so far. I have had a few of the scopes mentioned on my Model 7. The first one was a Burris BP 3-9 but it just seemed to big for the rifle and I wasn't crazy about the Ballistic Plex and didn't really need it as most of my shots are less than 150 Yards.

I sold it and put an Elite 3200 2-7 on it. This is a real nice scope but still seemed a little long @ 11.5 Inches so I sold it to a forum member
and thats why I am looking again. I am leaning toward the Burris Timberline, they are a nice compact size and I have heard pretty good comments on them. Still looking though, the search is half the fun of getting a new scope or a new gun.

Probably a few bucks more, but I have a 3x9x33 Compact on my Remington 541-T that I have had to put on a buddies Model 7 when he fell on his and it fit the gun perfectly...

I did notice that Leupold makes a 2x7x33 in their VX-I and VX-II...I'd go with one of those...

I wouldn't worry about the parallex, it won't make enough difference for you to notice...

One advantage that I like about a Leupold...As you get older (as I have) :) you can return the
scope to Leupold and have the Heavy Duplex Retical installed...I have done this on 2 rifles and my brother has done this as well...This really helps with the low light shots...We find that we can see the deer fine at low light, it's the retical that's hard to pick up...

This past hunting season, I had a Nikon Buckmasters 3-9x40mm on my Rem. Model 7 .308. I just replaced it with a Leupold VX-III 2.5-8x36mm. It's shorter and lighter but I think it's a better match for the Model 7 than the Buckmaster is. BTW, I bought it at Gander Mountain yesterday because they are taking an additional 30% off the clearance price on all of the Leupold VX-III scopes. It ended up costing me just over $240.00 for it. I have never paid a price like that for such a good quality scope. Needless to say, there weren't many VX-III scopes left.
