500 S&W Handi Rifle
« on: January 18, 2009, 02:22:34 PM »
I have a Handi Rifle chambered in 500 S&W. I mounted a Pentax Gameseeker 1.75 x 5 scope on it and 700 gr Tyranasourus bullets. I went to sight the new scope in today. I really liked this scope it had very clear optics. The first shot no problem, second shot scope became smokey, third shot the scope is FRIED! Does anyone have suggestions on what scope can take this recoil? I really don't want open sights. Could the barrel be tapped farther down the barrel and use a pistol scope? thanks :'(

The Nikon Prostaff 2-7x32 Shotgun scope works great on mine with all loads I've shot including the 700gr T-rex.

thanks, I'm gonna look at the Nikon. I just removed the Pentax and will be sending it to get repaired or replaced. I hope they back the warranty. I've never had a Pentax before and probally wont have a another one. If they do repair I gues I'll have a good 22 scope. haha thanks ksp500

WOW!!!

I have a Leupold 2X7X32 on mine with no problems. I have it mounted in Leupold PRW rings and on a factory Ultra base.

I also have two of those Pentax Gameseekers. Mine are fixed power, one 4 and the other 6x. So far they have been perfect. But neither is on a recoiling caliber.

I always choose Leupold, they have never let me down.

Yes!
That is exactly how I setup my 500 S&W Handi barrel. I installed a Burris 1.5-4 handgun scope and Weaver 4X4 rings, I really like this setup.
The pic in my avatar is with my 500.

As CW stated in his post, I always prefer Leupold and own way more of them than any other brand and have never had one let me down. I can't say that about some of the other brands I have had.

GOOD SHOOTING!

Old Pentax scopes were made by Burris, they are typical outstanding Burris quality.  New Pentax scopes sure look exactly like the upper level of Leapers Chinese line of scopes.  Can't prove they are, but pretty much know there isn't a factory with a Pentax Name on it that makes rifle or pistol scopes....

I've never had a Pentax before and probally wont have a another one.

I wouldn't blame the scope.  The Prostaff is a good choice.

Swampy is right. That load/round has some stiff recoil. Its quite likely its performance is par for the coarse for all scopes in its price range. There is no suggestion of the velocity the OP is attaining, but the 700gr is a specialized bullet, I doubt he is loading it to skip off the ground before reaching the target.  ::) ;D

The Nikon's have had some good reports here. Its general consensus that they are a good scope.

I put a 2x7 Burris on mine, and finally got it to zero, after taking quickdtoo's advice about the Burris posi-align rings. I used the .010 shim amd it worked great.
