Disappointed with BC
« on: January 19, 2009, 03:28:48 AM »
I bought a Buffalo Classic just before Christmas and have been able to get 40 rounds through it.  It shoots just fine (better that I do). Yesterday, I removed the butt stock to install a site. The large bolt that holds the stock on was cross threaded into the receiver. It was a bear to get out. There is no way it will go back in. I have cross threaded more that 1 bolt and know it can happen. I also know it is really clear that it is happening. Why the assembler let this out the door is a mystery to me. I will be calling customer service tomorrow for some help, but wondered how they are to deal with. Any help or advice??

I can't say as to customer service having never had to deal with them.
I would suggest calling them as you mentioned but would fix the problem myself with a tap and die of the correct thread.
Shouldn't be a big deal.
Just be extra careful in the futher as once cross threaded it is real easy for it to happen again.

Good luck and keep us informed as to what their advice to you is.

I would run a tap into the hole - as mentioned make sure it is straight before going in with it. When you start the new bolt or even the old one if it is not messed up - use your fingers to get it stared into the hole, before you "torque" on it. if you do not have taps or just do not want to fool with it, you can send it back. Good Luck and Good Shooting

The hardest part in dealing with Madison is getting a hold of them, you can expect a 15-20 minutes wait on hold before they talk to you, from then on it should be smooth sailing from most reports. If it's buggered too bad, they may need to replace the frame in which case they'll need all barrels that have been fitted to it. If they used the info in the FAQs and Help sticky to install the stock bolt in the first place, it wouldn't have happened for you to have to deal with it!! ::)

Tim

When installing a stock, hold the stock firmly against the mating surface of the frame, then start the bolt by turning the socket extension by hand, it's real easy to cross thread the bolt if it's not aligned perfectly, once it's started and turns freely, use the ratchet or whatever handle you want. A little white grease on the bolt will also aid in installation/removal.Make sure the hammer can be cocked after swapping a stock, some bolts (or stock bolt channels may be too short) without a washer may be too long and require at least one washer to provide sufficient hammer clearance within the action.

Any time you are putting a bolt, nut, or anything with threads onto something else with threads you should always turn the object backwards 1/4-1/2 turn.  As you turn it backwards, you will feel a small "click" as the threads on both items line up.  Once this has happened you can start threading the parts together.  The "click" you feel is the two end threads dropping into engagement.

I know it is too late for you, and in your case I know it is not your fault.  The way I see it, you have three options;

1- Call customer service and get them to fix the receiver.
2- Run a tap of the proper thread through to correct the cross-threading, and be careful anytime you tighten the part up.
3- drill and install a helecoil then refit stock bolt.

If it were me I would drill it out, tap it, and put in a Heli-Coil insert and be done with it. It will take you less than 10 minutes. Beats sending it back to the factory and waiting God knows how long to get it back.

Yup.

It's very easy to do a Heli coil and it will make for a good repair.
It's a no brainer... fix it in 10 minutes or send it back for how ever long it takes.
What are you waiting for??   Get out the drill... Let's get started!! ;D

He'd still have the cross threads.
Heli coil would fix it properly.

Another option would be to drill and tap it for a 10mm bolt which is slightly bigger than a 3/8", but that would depend on the cost difference tween the Helicoil kit and the bolt, drill and tap for the 10mm.
