1894 Win. Legendary Frontier 38-55
« on: August 24, 2003, 01:23:17 PM »
Has anyone have experience loading one of these? I loaded one .375 Case with .380 TrueShot GC Cast and it will not chamber. Brass is probley to thick. I bought one box of the Win. Factor stuff and mounted a Lyman reciever site and a Ashley front post but havn't made it to the range yet.

Also need source of good jacketed hunting bullets for deer although i may us cast.

thanks

If it say's 38/55 on the barrel, use 38/55 brass!
Might save a trip to casualty. safe shooting, regards Jonf

I agree with Jon F, that you should use .38-55 brass.  I think the bullet diameter you were using was a bit large for a modern barrel.  I have a Chief Crazy Horse that I use .375 cast bullets in.  I also have used the Barnes jacketed bullets  and had good success.  They are .377, if I remember correctly.  I think that you will find that cast bullets are all you need for deer or black bear.  THe factory ammo is way underloaded, and it feels like shooting an overgrown .22 Magnum.

375 cases will not work in my 1894 Alberta Diamond Jubilee.  I use .38-55 cases when available.  When they are scarce, which they are now becoming up here in northern Alberta Canada, i fireform .30-.30 cases they are a touch shorter but work great and .30-.30 cases are always all over my shooting range.

I think if you slug your bore it will run around .377.I cast and size my bullets .3785 and they group good.

i shoot with a couple of guys that own both caliber guns.
the 375 would load and shoot 38-55's but the 38-55 would not chamber the 375.  the one who owns the 38-55 moulds his own lead bullets and sizes them to 377. he has had excellent accuracy using hornady 220 grain jsp i think they call them interloc or something now. i have personally seen him bust 12inch balloons at 450 yards using a marbles tang sight.
i had a hard time keeping up with him using my buffalo classic 45-70 using a creedmore tang sight. im very impressed with the accuracy of the 38-55
