What to do or say about this B.S story...
« on: January 19, 2009, 04:01:11 AM »
Hey all,
My stepson's father keeps telling the boy {15} that all he does to get coyotes is to kill rabbits
and throw them in a field and waits for them to come runin in.So now the kid came out with a story last night that he and his dad went out last year and killed a rabbit and sure enough a coyote came in and they killed it, no game calls just a dead rabbit. I said thats enough to myself and said BULL !! >:( That would have been the first thing out a your mouth after you came home 2yrs ago. I said that doesn't happen that way and theres WAY MORE TO IT than just putting a dead rabbit in a field and they just come runin in.
So now he thinks I'm wrong and his father knows how to hunt coyotes. I'm gonna tell him to go onto one of these sites and tell his method of coyote hunting and see what he gets in replies.

You can't rule out the possibility it happened ONCE. I think you'd have to be willing to sit and wait a long time tho for a repeat.

Heck I had it happen ONCE for me with a fox. I shot a squirrel out back that had been raiding the bird feeder. A day or two later I was looking out the back window when a fox jumped off the rock wall and grabbed the squirrel and took off back into the woods with it. I sure would have gotten bored waiting for it all that time tho but it was a unique event to witness that one time.

Maybe that sort of oddball once in a life time event prompted such a story. Then too it might just be completely bogus and BS also.  :o

I bet a Coyote would come out to a field if you killed a rabbit every day and threw it in the same place.  After doing this for 6 months I bet the Coyotes would be real predictable.  Larry

I agree with Bill.

I'll add a little story too. A very good friend of mine on my pistol team tells a story similar to yours. he was squirrel hunting and shot one from the top of a tree. On its way down, hitting limbs it would "squeak". When it hit the ground it let out some more noises. before my friend could move, a fox ran out from cover and pounced on the critter. My friend just stood there and watched, he didn't want to shoot the fox so let it go. My friend said it was kind of surreal, like the fox knew what was happening and it had been done FOR him. ::)

So I say, It definitely COULD have happened once and a quirk like Bills and my story's. But its just that. Now BAITING, that's another story and it works well. I used to shoot a number of them off calf carcasses. They would die, we would haul them up on to some power lines where it was clear. Set back a couple hundred yards and watch.. pick them off as they came and went to feed. THAT WORKS!!!

A kid should look up to his father. A father is one thing, you sound more like a dad and that's where the real fun is. Take that kid hunting and do right by him, he will come around. I have had step mom not a pop, but my kid brother has my pop as a step. Kinda went like your describing all thru the kid years. we knew his pop was a problem and just "buying" my brothers affections. But he didn't. Well.. let me tell you, there was not a dry eye in the house at my Lil brother's wedding when he held his glass high and proclaimed my father as his best friend and person he looked up to and revered most!!!
Bide your time my friend, you will get yours and enjoy yourself much better for it. Remember its not a contest, be the better man!!

At the risk if sounding like a family consular here, CW has a great point. You don't want to get into a pissing contest with another dad. Give the kid soft answers and then let him find out who knows how to hunt coyotes. Sounds like the boy is already learning to play you against the other dad and some kids learn quick how to maximize on that. The immature man will try to buy the kids affection one way or another. Don't play that game.

CW - You ARE a man of wisdom !!! I think you read that pretty dam well  ;)
I don't spend much time with him like I could because and not sayin it his fault but he's got ADHD / BI-POLAR. It's hard for me having the patients required in the woods getting him to try and set still and walk quietly. If things don't happen right then and there then he's rantin and ravin about how much better it is where his father hunts. Its a crap shoot with him. I got him a 10/22 for CHRISTmas a few yrs back and he's nowhere ready for one yet so it will set in my safe til he's 18. We were at a friends house and he had his bb
pistol with him and after he was done with it my buddy told him to go give it to me to put away well he wouldn't take that advice ..{cause that means I'd have control over it} so he stashed it loaded and with safety off in on a bed and we all were out at a bon fire and hwere he comes screamin bloody murder.
He and our friends son were messin around and the freinds son jumped on the bed and laid on it and it fired and shot right into my step sons hand almost through it if it were another couple of inches would have been his jugular the way his hand was settin near his neck !
Oh his father is a dusie too say the least I was once feelin nice and let the boy take his 10/22 to his dads
and never seemed to come back home with him.I say wheres the 22 and he'd say oh were sightin it in and then we'll bring it back..well that went on for about a month then I asked again and he said dads keeping it at his house and thats where its stayin now. I said bull crap !! >:(

So his father gets on the phone with me tellin me how its stayin there and he controls it now and and thats the way its gonna be. I said you got a reciept for that there gun ?? He goes no , I say you got 15 min. to put that gun in my hands cause I have a reciept and if ya don't I'm callin the cops for you stealin my gun. He was here in 10 min. !! His father is what you'd call a criminal and has been teachin him to be a poacher and just not to tag anything you shoot and just plain and simple thumb your nose at athority.Major SCUM BAG ! But I wish the boy was easier to work with but he gets way too ramy for me to work with at times, I'd like to know how to deal with him still tryin to figure that out but get discuraged.

Sounds to me like 'how to hunt coyotes' is not your biggest problem. Yours is a difficult battle, one that I fought for years. In the end (it took a long time for him to see) my stepson realized that my ways were legal, safe and fun.....never having to look over my shoulder. His 'real' father gave up the battle and is probably still doing all the DA things he tried to teach the boy.

;D  Slightly possible , Coyote could have heard the shot and came by to investigat . Smelled the blood and with luck was seen. I have seen some odd things in the woods . This year I walked up on the same fox 2 different days in the same field while deer hunting . He is a local with a den close by and I have spotted him before.
I also one time saw my dad shoot a duck with a 22-250 against a log in a river . The duck flipped up out of the water and landed on the log with it's belly up in the air , and gutted.
I saw this happen , but would not ever say it could happen again . Apparently the bullet hit right at water level and the shock energy from the water did all the amazing stuff.
I also shot the whole face off a Ground hog one time with a Sweed 6.5 . He was standing in a hole ran about 15 yards to another hole turned and came back to where he was standing. One of my hunting buds was watching with binocs , he said it looked like one of the slow motion sneeze films and the whole face dissapeared. When we went to look at the damage it was like taking a teacup of blood and vaporizing it over a 2x3 ft area. I didn't know Ghogs had that much blood in their head. We could still hear him thumping around in the hole.

i know for sure the rabbit method wont work here in sw mo. there are so many yotes that they have et all the rabbits already.it would take a couple days to find and kill a rabbit.if yu sit in the right spot fer a couple hrs tho a yote will usually come trotting by.

Maybe the kid forgot to mention that they shot the rabbit in the ass, and threw it into the field where it screamed for awhile before dying?  I'd believe that one.
