primers backing out
« on: January 19, 2009, 12:01:19 PM »
Good Day to all. Am working a load up involving H380 and 70 GR HPBT bullets in a 243 . using CCI primers and mixed head stamp brass. 36 - 38 grains of powder. 3 rounds a piece. primers were backed out and striker marks were cratered.
Before this I tested out some loads using the same powder and nosler BT with no results like this. Thank you for your time.........Bill

I would guess that the pressure is so low that the case isn't expanding properly and setting the base back against the bolt face. Using H380 and the 70 gr Nosler, A minumin load is 40 grs. Try upping the powder chg. If these "mixed head stamp" cases are used, probably, they could have loose primer pockets to boot.

You may find that using mixed cases is not a good idea. Different cases have different capacities. What might be max in one case could be over in another!

What happens when you touch one off is that the primer is blown back against the bolt, and then the case is stretched back and the primer is reseated. With too light of loads, not enough pressure is generated to stretch the case which leaves the primer sticking out a hair..

Good day to all. Don,  I checked up on what you said about being light charges. looks liek you are right. the one caliber/one book....sierra #3......lyman 47 all say 35 to 37 gr as a starting load. nosler 5th/speer #3/ Lee modern relaoding all start at 40 and 41. Thank you very much, lesson learned. will check all my manuals. Until now would grab 2 at random and go from there after checking powder manufacturers websites. Thanks to all. much appreciated.........Bill

Could this be from a headspace issue?  Im fairly new to reloading. so this may be a dumb question. The last time I had my 35 whelen out, I had a few cases with the primer backed out just a bit.
I dont care what gun Im using as long as Im hunting

Im new to relaoding as well burnt, but with 20 rounds fired before this with nothign different happening. It either had to be a bullet or powder issue. I just wasnt smart enuff to find it w/o someone pointing it out to me....Bill

Yes it can be a headspace issue. Were the cases fired in this rifle before you loaded them? If fired in a rifle with tighter headspace they would not fit snug in your chamber. Any cases fired with light loads should be set aside and not used for full power loads as they can develop excessive headspace. The firing pin can drive the case forward, the primer will detonate and back out to the bolt face. If there is insufficient pressure to overcome case wall friction in the chamber and push the case back, it will develop excessive headspace.

I never mix cases. This may be overkill to some, but I keep my cases segregated by rifle and only fire them in that particular rifle. I load rifles for accuracy and dependability, not volume of rounds.

you need enough chamber pressure to expand the brass so it locks to the chamber to keep it from moving

Not to further HIJACK the thread, but are those your mules ?!!??? I tried riding one that size a few years ago and thought I was gonna split in half when he broke into a lumber trot. To beat all that,he decided stepping on my foot would be a good way to end his day, while I was helping get his harness off.

Hunts, no hes not mine. I havnt owned a mule in a while now but hope to get where I can soon. At 18 hands and about 2300 hes a lil big to be riding. Try one around 15 to 16 or even smaller. think you will like it better. Have a good one.........Bill
