Huntsman Questions

Hi guys:
New to the smoke pole of a HANDI.
Don't want to steel the thread but what is the deal on the 25acp breach plug?
If I want to try one where would I get it?
Also what powder charge can a 50 Huntsman take on a SB2 frame.
I have been in BP for 29 years but no experence with the H&Rs.

Sorry... had to be done!  ;D

Honestly though, there is a stickie on the .25acp in this forum.  It replaces the factory plug that uses a 209 primer in a disposable plastic holder.  From what I have read, it increases accuracy and a more/cleaner burn of the powder with less blowby.  There is a limitation with the type of powder used.  It seems the .25acp primer doesn't get hot enough to burn all the powder of some types. I am just repeating what I have heard, so take this with a grain of salt.

The 25acp breechplug is available from www.prbullet.com (scroll down left column and click on NEF ACP Breechplug)

I have this set-up for my stainless sidekick and it is ok. I use a Remington 7 1/2 small rifle primer in a 25acp brass case and the primed case is inserted into the breechplug after loading the muzzleloader. The pr (precision rifle) website suggests using Triple 7 ffg powder and that is what I use. This system works fine as far as I can tell, as I never used the NEF supplied breech plug from new so I can't compare it. My only complaint is that Triple 7 is a dirty crud ring causing powder and I clean mine after 2-3 shots. After 3 shots it is real difficult/ damn near impossible to seat another bullet, is what I found out. I use the 40 cal 200 grain bullet and sabot from pr as well. I take the plug out and soak it in pr black powder cleaner and then use the pr black powder cleaner and patches to soak the barrel and it comes clean fairly easily. The plug however takes some work as it gets kinda sorta wore in/baked on if you don't keep at it. I just detest having to clean after so few shots and no I won't spit patch cause it just pushes the crud deeper in and against the breechplug as I have experimented with this as well. I don't use it often but when I do it is fairly accurate and works ok.

If I had to do it over again I would buy a black powder rifle that could use Blackhorn 209 and the 209 primer simply because of the cleaning issue. I'm not much of a muzzleloader shooter, just own one to extend my deer hunting seasons. I do most of my shooting with Topper 30-30 rifles, and a .223 Ultra, now that is fun.

Didn't your Huntsman come with a 209 breech plug? Triple 7 was recommended with the .25 acp plug because the .25 primer is not "hot" enough to ignite BH 209 consistently, whereas the 209 primer is.

 Correct, but its a round robin.  ;D The reason for the 25acp is that the 209 is TOO much for some loads. Actually moving the seated bullet forward before ignition.

 the 25acp is the best money I have ever spent on my sidekick!!!  I LOVE this thing!! 
  Yes on the "crud ring". I soak a patch in #13 and it easily cleans out. I do this every other shot and remove and clean the BP every ten or so shots. For me the BP is not a hi volume shooter and only used for venison harvesting. I was VERY satisfied at the accuracy and consistency of the shots since the 25ACPBP last season.

That's true. I was addressing his statement that he wished he had bought a ML that could use BH-209 and 209 primers. The problem of "lifting" would be the same with any other ML as well.

#1oneshot, My Sidekick did come with a 209 type plug but Blackhorn 209 is not recommended for use in a non sealed system.
I was told many times not to use it with the "primer carrier" system of the NEF with Blackhorn powder. It requires a more positive seal than what the primer carrier provides.

Hubbards did make a breechplug that would allow one to use Blackhorn 209 , but it has not been put into widespread distribution to my knowledge.
