Possibles Bag
« on: January 19, 2009, 05:22:33 PM »
Can anyone give me some idea of what Handi parts I would want in my possiables bag for an Ultra Handi if going out back for a few days and only taking this one rifle? Would a multi tool with the drivers and pliers be enough tool for what parts I may need to change? The parts that come to me from what I've read here at GB are firing pin, hammer spring, etc that can be changed with little hassle. What are the part(s) that will go, sooner or later that I should have anyway?
I have a bad habit of over thinking everything when stepping off the cement and don't want to be without if it's a small amount of weight that could salvage a hunt.  Thanks -gary

Recommended spare parts are listed in the FAQs, but a multi-tool will be useless to R&R them, you need pin punches and a hammer for that, read the trigger hone info in the FAQs.  ;)

For me, the easiest way to tackle this would be to first check to see if the barrels fit two receivers. Then remove the stocks from one receiver and bring it along in the bag.

What I do is, just always bring two firearms on a trip/hunt away from home. Some times things happen and having a complete, functional ready to go rifle, as a back, up makes more sense. Fix things if you have to, but your there to hunt not work on your firearms. I just swap and save the work for home in my free time.

I realize some people may not have two firearms to do this with, so that brings it full circle back to your suggestion.  ;D

I have to agree with CW on having the backup, and if that is your only Handi, then that's a perfect excuse to buy another, like anyone really needs an excuse!

Where I hunt it's just a matter of driving an hour and a half to get there, but still, I always carry another firearm just in case.

Even then, I always carry a sidearm besides the extra rifle, and my possibles bag has my extra loaded magazines for the pistol, sometimes the GPS, two knives, binoculars, first aid kit, duct tape, pencils, pens, twine, matches, TP, and as much extra ammo as I can stuff in there for the three guns!

And lets not forget the bag with the cold drinks and munchies, and plenty of water!

I'm not talking going into the deep forest or mountains for several days, but the brush country of south Texas can be pretty unhospitable when out there alone.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

A extra reciever is a good Idel  CW, I don't think the wieght or bulk would be as much as a hammer and punches plus a small bag of spares. You would need a socket long drive and at least a tee handle thou to change out stocks.

But as to parts that break seem to be the hammer spring transfer bar and fireing pin are the most likely to go, I think I' carry an extra set of pins if you where gonna do this just incase you missplace one while you got it apart, and some tooth picks or slave pin for reassembly.

BTW i've had some of my handies for over eight years now with out a single failure, Knock on wood. 8)

I never leave home without a cleaning rod - My .223 is an ejector, it's been known to stick a case infrequently...  >:(

+1 on the cleaning rod, my 243 is the same way.

If you're just going out for a copuiple of days, I would do as said ,and bring a second firearm, leave it in the truck, if needed(not likely) just switch rifles. I took my .270 and my 8x57 this year for elk. The first weekend I slipped in the snow/rocks and banged the rifle pretty hard. No visible damage, but I switched rifles, fearing the scope was misaligned. I  ended up using and harvested my first elk with my sporterized turkish mauser, the $49.00 rifle!

A note on clearing stuck cases in an ejector .223: I carry a Leatherman Micra and the small flat screwdriver is great for prying out stuck cases.  Plus, it's tiny...so tiny I don't even notice it's in my pocket and I get a host of other tools as well.

Pigboy ,

One Handi (your choice on caliber) and a good 357 ,41 mag or my choice 44 mag revolver and done..

Though i have always liked the cowboy way of thinking about this so i would take the 44 mag Handi and the Ruger super blackhawk , One ammo two guns ;)

Thanks for all the replys. What I was talking/hoping for was not a bench fix, but a quick fix for my Handi when heading out incase of fail. Better think again.
The furthest I got with it was pulling off the forearm and running some JB through the barrel.I only have one Handi (.308)
I always carry a 357 revolver when hunting and always have a back up rifle in camp/truck. Hoping to buy a Handi in 30/30 or 35Rem soon to reload for in the next four years. Thanks again. -gary
