leverevolutions in a 94
« on: January 21, 2009, 12:55:40 PM »
Has anyone tried these in a 94?  They seemed to have designed them for the 336.  Just picked up my first 94 and now that Hornady is selling just the bullets I thought I would try them.  Should work fine in my 336 but not sure about the Win.

I've loaded some FTX with various loads of Varget.  Just waiting to get my 94 back from getting a new Duracoat finish.

I'll post my results when I put them through it.  I've got a scope on a side-mount.

Why would you think they were made for the 336?  My hunting partner has loaded some too for his 336 and we are just waiting to get them both to the range.

They seem to work fine in my 94AE. Fairly accurate too.  But they're not accurate in my 1972 top eject 94. It prefers handloads...33gr. H4895 topped with a Speer 150gr FN bullet @2200fps. This load will cut neat little 3/8" to 1/2" groups at 50yds with open iron sights.

I've tested the LeveRevolution 30-30s out fo my M94AE with a 24" barrel using an Oehler M43.  The velocity was 2452 fps (some 40 fps higher than advertised) and the pressure was 37,800 psi(M43).  Accuracy for the 7 shots with a 2 1/2X scope was 1.25" at 100 yards.  The measured BC was .304 which the old 30-30 a quenuine 300 yard capability.  Zeroed at 200 yards mid range is 2.87".  The 300 yard drop is 12.26" with 1714 fps and 1043 ftlbs remaining.  I did not test it out of my M94 Carbine but out of a 21" TC Contender barrel the velocity was 2335 fps with 5 shots into 1.1" at 100 yards.

The LeveRevolution ammo was designed and is marketed toward the 24" barreled Marlin XLRs.  Many want to complain about the lessor velocity in the 20" barreled carbines but even then the velocity is very good considering the 160 gr bullets and much improved BC.  That shold improve down range ballistics.  Even considering the carbines to be "short range" rifles with decent sights (receiver sights or a scope) the use of the LeveRevolution ammo makes them into decent 250 yard rifles.  I have loaded the 160 gr FTX bullets with conventional powders to equal the velcoity of the factory rounds but the pressure is pushing the SAAMI MAP at 42,000+ psi.  I'm looking forward to trying the Superperformance powders to be released in January to equal factory velocity with equal pressures.

The offer nothing over conventional ammo but they will work.

Well, some of us have been "makin" shots a lot farther than 250 yards with M94 Carbines for many years also.  Some of us even are "makin" those shots with cast bullets.  However, being able to kill deer or other similar critter at 250 yards with improved ammuntion suits some of us just fine.  Might not suit you but then some of us can't shoot that well at full gallop, bare back, on trusty steed, hanging off the side shooting under the steeds neck clear across canyons "makin" shots either :)

It's not improved.  It's just different looking.

Larry sounds like ya'll need to practice your ridin, and instead of steeds, try a horse instead, and also instead of a gallop, try it at a dead run. A horse is smoother at a dead run, and you don't have to lead the game if their runnin in the same direction as your horse, and horses have a better factory warranty.  :)

OH well ! I lay across a bunch of horses when I shoot sometimes but in summer the hood is too hot to do so. I go to the range and shoot at targets out to 500 yards with a open sighted 30-30 and often hit them ( 14 X 18 steel plate) . but hunting seldom is a shot over 40-50 yards . With a 30-30 longerst shot may have been 80 yards .
Got to ask , I have hunted with the red tipped ammo and it bends to the side in the magazine. I get home on a cold day and remove it and it takes a while for the tip to warm and go back pointed . How does this effect down range ?
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
