New Mauser!!!

I just picked up another mauser today and boy is this one a beauty!  Atleast I thought so, enough to shell out $350 for the rifle, RCBS dies, 100 bullets, 4 boxes of brand new brass and a hornady reloading manual.  I think I got a pretty good deal but even better, I really like the rifle. 

It's a Mauser Modelo Argentino 1909 in 7.65 X 53.  I've heard that ballistics are similar to a .308?  All numbers match, including the stock which has been reworked into a mannlicher style.  It also has a fancy 2 position safety and a nice trigger.  I've heard that the Argentinian Mausers have 1 of the strongest receivers of all mausers.  Anyway, here are some pics, I'm looking forward to all info any of you can give me.

The Argentine 1909 action has been the basis for many a fine sporter!   It's always been my favorite 98.  Note the hinged floorplate and release.  That style has been copied by commercial actions and used as a replacement part on many other 98's of the same size for a long time.

If you're happy with the price you done good!  You don't need anyone else to validate your decision!   ;)  You have a nice, pretty rifle that I would guess was sporterized by (one of) it's former owner with the help of a 'smith!  You can almost visualise him doing or having done one thing at a time: bend the bolt, drill and tap, install the Buhler (?) safety...  It was probably that person's pride and joy when he got it the way he wanted it!   :)  It's now yours, enjoy it!   ;D

I have one of these too.  The swept back bolt on mine was a key to it being cut down from the longer barrel.  This was done by Ye Old Gun shop in LA so they would sell back in the 60's.  These do make nice sporters. Mine has a hard time chambering the 7.65x53arg so i need to do a chamber cast to make sure what caliber it really is.  I been thinking about doing a rebarrel on it too.  These sure are purdy ones.

The history of these were there are a few different carbines too. like a calvary carbine and an engineering carbine too. Do a search on it and all the info will come up.  you may want to checkout www.carbinesforcollectors.com too.  Look at the "mauser carbine" section.

The one i have looks like the 1891 carbine with the extended mag.

I like having military sporters to play with too.  I've built all of them from parts rather than ruin a collectable.

the 7.65x53 is one of the best of the military turnbolt cartridges.
if it is still accurate, you will have a fine hunting rifle. Stock up on ammo,
it is becoming scarce. I have heard rumors that Privi Partizan may not be imported
much longer.

The 1909 Modle made by DWM is a choice action for sporter conversion. While not the "strongest" 98, it is one of the most nicely finished. Plus it already has a streamlined trigger guard with a quick release floorplate. As for strength, all 98s made by reputable manufactures are strong enought for their intended fodder. For use as a sporting rifle, if you are going to rebarrel it for a cartridge of higher intesity than original, you may want to have it re-heat treated. This can prevent the lugs from setting back into the metal of the locking shoulders after repeated high intensity firings.

That's one nice looking Mauser and a excellent cartridge (.311-.312 dia).  Ballistically equal to the 308 and probably more accurate with heavy bullets.  If I had a beauty like that I sure wouldn't compare it to a 308.  JMTCW.

Very nice rifle.  I wonder if the rear base should be turned 180 degrees.  Some had a chamfer to clear the stripper clip bridge.

Ya know if you look close it looks as if there is a chamfer. That is one pretty gun.

That is indeed a fine looking rig galster69. I have no experience with Argentinean Mausers except the good reports I've read about them.

Thanks to all for the comments.  As for the rear base, there is no chamfer on either end of the "stock" rear base but this one was filed a little bit.  I took it out to sight in a new scope and found that the filed chamfer was insufficient.  I eventually brought it home, did some more filing on it and I was able to get it to clear very nicely.  Not sure if the pictures show it very well but the rear right corner was also filed a little to provide clearance of the bolt.  She's now set up and will be sighted in on Saturday.  I'll let you know how accurate she shoots.  Thanks again for all the comments and info!
