Gas check size for .45 rifle and pistol?
« on: January 22, 2009, 06:27:22 PM »
Is there a difference in the base, gas check base? Won't Hornaday gas checks in .45 work for either?
Confused, Steve

Yes, there is just one size gas check for 45 caliber, from both Hornady and Gator.  I recommend the Gator brand as they are less expensive, and have a bit wider opening, which is a real plus for rifle bullets which are over .460 diameter.  RCBS and Lyman checks are made by Hornady to Hornady specs.

Who carries Gator gaschecks? I don't think I've ever seen any for sale from outfits I deal with.

Gator Checks of Bullet Swaging Supply, Inc. has no website, but you can email Larry Blackmon at leblackmon@colla.com and from my experience he's great to deal with.

Also getting to your question on the gas checks, Gator Checks are offered in two .45 sizes.  Both accept the same shank size, if I recall correctly the ID is .426, the check for the .458 rifle is slightly thicker than the other .45 for pistol.  Their prices beat any I've seen for Honady and I cannot see any compromise of quality or accuracy, and have heard many others on forums swear by these checks.  Hope this helps a bit
