Clark Custom 77/22
« on: January 23, 2009, 11:54:38 AM »
Hello shooters

Anyone else out there own one of these great rifles?

I have owned mine for a number of years, and it shoots GREAT!

If it has any issue, it is the fact it is heavy.

However, it has the great RUGER rotory 10 shot mag. which is always a plus.

After a very unhappy time with a TC "classic" I was looking for something which would really shoot, and do so without all the feeding, shooting, grouping issues I had with the "classic".

While dreaming about a Kimber or Cooper, I happened to find this Clark Custom sitting in a Spokane gun shop, where it was traded - new - by a fellow who wanted something light in wt.

Well the price was right, the trigger is great, Walther barel and it shoots VERY well.

I, although I do have a number of high end target loads on hand, have just never finished up the testing I'd still like to do.

The CRuger, does however, shoot a number of different ammos to very small 5 or 10 shot groups at 50yds.

The one group I have fired at 100yds. with target ammo went 9 out of 10 into 3/4".

That was with the old and very good Fed. Gold metal match which sadly is no longer in production.

Glad I allowed a shop owner to talk me into a discounted carton and now wish I had bought all he had.

It is always good to have some bragging ammo on hand, just in case.

Anyway, don't hear much about these very fine rifles and wonder why.

Check them out on the web under Clark Custom.

Keep em coming!

Well not truly a Clark Custom Guns Ruger 77/22, but I am in the process of building a Custom Ruger 77/22 with a Clark Custom Guns 20" Stainless-Steel Bull Barrel. It will reside in a Volquartsen Custom Laminated Wood Stock, with a Weaver V-16 4x16x42mm AO Rifle Scope with Fine Crosshair / 1/4 Minute Dot Reticle. I have already reworked the Factory Trigger so it breaks like glass at 1 1/4 pounds safely.

My Clark Custom Guns Barrel should be here this coming week. The nall I am waiting for is the Ruger Action Screws and High Stainless-Scope Rings and I can put it all together.

My Ruger 77/22 started life out as a Stainless-Synthetic model.

When I first acquired the rifle I HATED the Ruger Boat Paddle Stock so I made a filler panel to fit into the hollowed out portion of the buttstock out of some sheet plastic material I had on hand. I then covered the panels I made for the buttstock, the grip & forend insert panels with Camo Tape (as seen in the photo above).

I am totally pleased with the way this little Ruger shoots for the most part but decided I wanted a Heavier Rifle to compete in our local Indoor Bench Rest Matches in the winter months, hence the make over.

I have heard nothing but good things about Clark Custom Guns Ruger Barrel so I decided to try one out for myself.

The Clark Customs look really nice. But if I was ever going to have a Custom 77/22 built, I'd go with a Green Hornet from Tac-Ops:

Here's the link to the entire article:

I'll bet the Clark Customs are a heck of lot less expensive though.

Don't know what the Tac-Ops cost, but as I recall the paper work stated the origional buyer of my CRuger paid 785.00 including the shipping from Clark.

I paid 600.00 for the still new rifle.

Clark's web site indicated a person can send them their already owned 10/22 or 77/22 and they will trick them out for you at a much reduced price to the 785.00.

I would like to trick out a 10/22, but by the time I put in all the parts and quality of parts I would like, I'd be about as well off to just buy another Clark Custom, which comes already "tricked out."

The Kimber or Cooper would have been sweet, but as stated, I really like the rotory 10 shot mag on the 10 and 77/22s.  Slick, works well AND!!!!!!!!!!!!! is totally out of the way!

Keep em coming!

I finally finished putting my Custom Ruger 77/22 together and have been shooting it ever chance I get at our local Indoor Shooting Range.

I basically used the Ruger Stainless-Steel 77/22 Action, reworked the trigger myself until it breaks like glass at 1 1/4 pounds, and drilled & tapped a hole for an overtravel screw. I then installed a Clark Custom Guns 20" x .920" Stainless-Steel Bull Barrel and set everything in a Volquartsen Laminated Roll Over Monte Carlo Stock (which I free floated from 2" in front of the Barrel Attaching V Block out to the Forend Tip).

I shot in our Indoor Rimfire Bench Rest League this winter at my local club. I put 400 rounds through the bore using Remington BULK Hollow Points breaking in the barrel. I cleaned it at regular intervals. Once I had the 400 rounds through this new Barrel. First up I tried CCI Standard Velocity. This ammo has shot good in previous 77/22's, but not in this Clark Custom Guns Barrel.

I totally cleaned the bore again and then switched ammo to SK Jagd Standard Plus. Now I was getting some where as this Clark Custom Guns Barrel seems to really like this ammo.

I finished up my Bench Rest League Monday evening at the Indoor Shooting Range. We use the USBR Target and shoot at 18 yards (the maximum distance we can shoot indoors at our club). I ended up with a total score for the year of 1496-65x out of a possible total score of 1500-150x.

All shooting was done with a Bench Rest Rigid Bipod up front and a Rabbit Ear Rear Bag under the Stock. We shoot off of Portable Shooting Benches with folding legs (we can not have permenant benches set up as the range is used for several other types of shooting discplines and we need the room when the benches are folded up).

All in all I am more than pleased with my Custom Ruger 77/22. I have more money invested in it than I had planned on investing. I am using a Weaver V-16 4x16x42mm AO Rifle Scope with a Fine Crosshair / Dot Reticle. I am convinced that this Custom Ruger 77/22 will outshoot the shooter.

SD Handgunner,

Great report, excellent shooting, and an extremely nice looking 77/22. Congrats on a job well done.

Thanks Skunk. This was a really fun project, and went together without any problems. I am quite pleased with the outcome as well. All in all I have been a rimfire addict for many years. I was one of the founding members of our Shooters Club and have served on the board of directors since day one back in 1990.

My oldest daughter is also shooting Rimfire Bench Rest League with the above pictured Custom Ruger 77/22. She is doing quite well for her first year of shooting competition but is frustrated cause she isn't shooting scores as good as I am. Well I've been doing this a whole lot longer than she has.

She is averaging 246.25 so far and has two scores yet to shoot. She'll pick it up a bit yet before she is done, I have faith.

Thanks again.

Here's an example of what Ted Kerns has done to Ruger rimfires for years.   This one is a 77/17HMR, but most of his conversions are based on the 10/22.

My 77/22 has seen 10's of thousands of rounds fired in it since I bought it new about 1983/84.   Only thing I've done to upgrade it was make it into a switch barrel 22LR/17HM2 with the addition of a Green Mountain barrel.   My full custom Ruger rimfire is a 10/22.   I still prefer the 77/22 over it any day of the week and twice on Sunday, but that's another story.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Skunk,
WOW!  I got excited when I read the 22 Green Hornet and thought I had my new coyote gun.  I have a standard Ruger 77/22 in 22 Hornet and like it a lot.  Still may have to give them a call on the 22LR version.
Thanks for adding another rifle to my list of stuff to get.
