Little-known pro-gun congresswoman picked for Clinton seat

Hey guys,
Check this out.
Wayne
================
ALBANY, N.Y. – Instantly opening a rift among New York Democrats, Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand — a little-known, pro-gun Democrat from a rural Republican district — won appointment Friday to the Senate seat left vacant by Hillary Rodham Clinton. Gov. David Paterson announced his choice a day after presumed front-runner Caroline Kennedy — a woman with considerably more star power but less experience — mysteriously dropped out of contention in an embarrassing turn of events that touched off sniping between the governor and the Kennedy camp.
Gillibrand, at 42, will be the youngest member of the Senate and one of 17 women in the chamber. The second-term congresswoman will assume the seat once held by Kennedy's uncle Robert F. Kennedy as well as by Daniel Patrick Moynihan.
"For many in New York state, this is the first time you've heard my name and you don't know much about me," said Gillibrand (pronounced JILL-ih-brand). "Over the next two years, you will get to know me. And, more importantly, I will get to know you."
Before the governor even took the podium to introduce Gillibrand, anti-gun crusader Rep. Carolyn McCarthy said she would challenge Gillibrand in the Democratic primary next year, or find someone who would. Gillibrand has a 100 percent voting record with the National Rifle Association.
McCarthy, a Long Island Democrat who ran for Congress after her husband was shot to death and her son wounded in the 1993 Long Island Rail Road massacre, said someone with such a record should not be the next senator from New York.
"The majority of New Yorkers believe in trying to reduce gun violence," she said.
Her complaint was echoed by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a Democrat-turned-Republican-turned-independent who has been one of the nation's most vocal gun control advocates. In a statement, the mayor noted his "strong disagreement with one area of her record as a member of Congress: illegal guns."
Bloomberg and McCarthy said Gillibrand co-sponsored legislation to deny information cities and police need to track illegal gun use. The legislation passed in the House but was never considered by the Senate, McCarthy said.
At the news conference, Gillibrand commended McCarthy for her "outstanding leadership in fighting against gun violence and keeping our children safe," and added: "I pledge to work with her on her signature bill for updating background checks to keep guns out of the hands of criminals." Gillibrand said she would support gun control "but also protect our hunters' rights."
The Senate appointment lasts until 2010, when a special election will be held to fill the final two years of Clinton's term.
In picking Gillibrand, the governor passed over a number of better-known and more accomplished politicians, including New York City Rep. Carolyn Maloney and New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.
Paterson cited Gillibrand's work ethic, background as a securities lawyer and knowledge of issues important to New York. He stressed that he didn't choose her because she was a woman or from upstate New York.
Several of those passed over didn't attend the news conference, even after the governor summoned New York's congressional delegation to Albany. Cuomo was among the no-shows, even though Gillibrand worked for him as legal counsel when he was housing secretary under President Bill Clinton.
Paterson "has likely engendered the wrath — privately, if not publicly — of a great number of prominent Democratic officials who would have liked the job themselves," said Steven Greenberg, a Siena College pollster.
President Barack Obama issued a statement praising the choice, saying Gillibrand would be a "strong voice for transparency and reform in government."
Clinton, whose nomination for secretary of state was confirmed by the Senate on Wednesday, also offered praise for Gillibrand, who worked on Clinton's 2000 Senate campaign.
"Kristen is an intelligent and dedicated public servant and a dear friend. I'm pleased that this seat, which has been my great honor to hold ... will be in such capable hands," Clinton said.
Meanwhile, the "personal reasons" that Kennedy cited in dropping out of contention remained a mystery.
A friend of Kennedy's who was involved in the selection process said Kennedy had a "minor issue with a nanny" that the governor's staff found to be irrelevant. The friend, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation, also said Kennedy had a $615 city tax lien that was settled in 1994 but no other tax problems.
Gillibrand, a married mother of two sons, modeled her own political career after Clinton's.
Her father is one of the most powerful lobbyists in the state capital, and she is the granddaughter of Polly Noonan, an intimate of the legendary Albany Mayor Erastus Corning.
After Gillibrand worked in New York City for a white-shoe law firm with long ties to the Democratic Party, Clinton introduced her to deep-pocketed donors and vouched for her as a candidate.
As a lawmaker, she has projected a down-home image in tune with her rural district, which stretches from Lake Placid past the state capital of Albany. Besides the backing of the NRA, she has the strong support of the New York Farm Bureau, which described her as "a leading advocate for agriculture in Washington." Her Web site's homepage includes a picture of cows.
Gillibrand beat Republican Rep. John Sweeney in 2006 in a nasty campaign and won again last fall against a former state Republican chairman in the GOP district.

Her pro-gun position is about the only thing I can agree with her on.  She seems to follow party line voting on everything else.  Notice her words connecting gun ownership & "Hunting rights".  This goes to show how little she knows about the real issue leaving the door open to restrict gun use for any other purpose.   She likely only supported gun rights because of her rural upstate constituients.  I see her as a typical politician who will say anything to get elected.  She ran against another strong gun rights supporter,  Republican (John Sweeney)  who was  kiciing her butt in the polls until at the last minute he got caught in a nasty battle with his wife.  Otherwise, she never would have been elected.  She ran a very nasty campaign & I do not trust her and will support any conservative  pro-gun candidate who  runs against her.

Guess what?  Now that she is a senator representing the whole state she now states she may have to "Adjust" her position.  This skank is as slick as they come and can not be trusted to do anything conservative.  She will get in line behind liberal democrats every time unless it affects her election.

rebAL:  Yes, she adjusted her position to recognize the need to deal with gun violence in the cities and she specifically stated 'cities'.  There are any number of ways to deal with this without having any impact at all on guns and hunting and one way is to take the NRA approach of the 'Three Strike Program', but we should hear what she ahs to say first.

Let's understand that she has not compromised one bit on guns and hunting and has not 'sucked' up to shumer or any of the others since being selected; to the contrary.  shumer has tried to con/cajole/bs and everything else you can think of to get some of her words into print that make it sound as though she has turned around, but she has not.

shumer wants her to tour the cities where 'gun violence' is high and I think when she does she will simply recommend tougher judges for the laws we already have on the books.  She has already said about the 'cities' that she has broader areas to represent.

This woman comes from a hunting and farming family.  She has already told carolyn mccarthy that her family 'kills their Thanksgiving Dinner' and that she recognizes how much firearms and hunting are cultural aspects of upstate history.

'Sk___'?  rebAL - low choice of terminology and insulting to every woman on the forum.  carolyn mccarthy, yes; hillary klinton, yes; charles shumer, yes.  Gillibrand, although a democrap, is still the best choice for upstate.  Do you think byron brown of buffalo would advocate for hunters and sportsmen?  how about cuomo - now that's one for ya.  Do you think anyone from any city along the Mohawk or Hudson would support sportsmen and gun ownership?

Sure there is 'common ground' with the NRA position and city gun violence problems and that is the '3 Strike Program'.  I do not think she will advocate for anything more restrictive than tough judges.  jmtcw.  Mikey.

rebAL:  I have been thinking about this since my last response to your post and I think we should drop the 'descriptive terminology', regardless of our personal feelings.  We are better than that and we need to stand together without giving someone the chance to 'wedge' us apart.  You should know that many outsiders read into these forums and I do not doubt for a moment that many may well be the opposition looking for choice words, statements or philosophies they can either use against us or use to buffer a politicians position.

I certainly feel we can detail our political disagreement with the new Senator without resulting to very insulting terminology and we are most certainly better than to use the same terminology when expressing our personal disdain for someone.  I'm going back to my response to your post and replace that language.  That particular term is pretty low and to use it insults every woman who visits these sites, including the Boss's wife and a number of our members.

Regarding her statement  about 'adjusting her position' - that statement was taken out of context specifically by shumer and his press corps.  The context is that 'as Senator I have a much broader area to represent now and I may have to adjust my position regarding gun violence in the cities, but there is a broad expanse of 'common ground' on which we can discuss this issue'.  What the hell is incriminating about that?  Did she 'suck it up' to shumer - nope.  Did she turn in for mccarthy - nope.  Has she fallen prey to the notion that nyc is the only voice - nope, she already mentioned she has a much broader area to represent.  Did she bend over for sharpton - nope; and, if you think for a moment that she would curry favor with that idiot then I believe you to be seriously mistaken.  I think her feelings about controlling gun violence 'in the cities' means tougher judges and harsher sentences.  I would absolutely love it if she wanted to introduce the Mariposa County, Arizona Sheriff - the one who runs the tent city for his prisoners who he dresses in pink jumpsuits - to the NYS Sheriff's Association as a example of how she believes we can help reduce crime.  Now that would make most of nyc puke pink lemonade to think of a hard-core lawman who doesn't tolerate crap from his prisoners.

I responded earlier to Graybeard about a post regarding her 'change of position' and stated that no such thing has happened, and I doubt it will.  shumer, specifically, has tried to twist her words into a straight out anti-gun perspective and it hasn't worked nor has she budged from her previous pro-gun positon.  Pictures showing the two together at news conferences show him to be a nervous zealot waiting for the moment to intervene should she say something he can't tolerate but she doesn't let him, and then afterward he holds his own news conference to twist her words into support for his position, but she isn't there when he holds his conference....... go figger.

The Boss wanted to throw a rope over the first branch he saw and has already hung her out to dry without giving her the chance to prove herself one way or the other, and I had to ask him if he really believed the crap he was reading about her before she even took her oath or had voted on any issue.  The Boss may not like the NRA much but anyone with a 100% voting record with them is much better than anyone to the contrary.

Here we have lots of media fed and fueled conjecture and fear-mongering and I think shumer is a major mover behind it all.  He wants the public to believe she has turned anti-gun so that the only support she gets is from the inner cities and not her rural, upstate constituents.  Even the Boss appears to believe some of the crap that comes out in the newspapers, yet nobody has asked for any direct response or clarification from the Senator herself and I wonder why.

Certainly we are literate and well enough written to e-mail her with a list of 4 or 5 direct questions or concerns regarding her position on different hunting and gun ownership issues and to ask for a direct response.  We should be able to accomplish this without being insulting or demeaning or accusatory or challenging.  We can always take the democraptic party position of flooding her office with e-mail and making demands but that doesn't always work and most likely would not work to any advantage, especially if she feels challenged.  Instead I think just one e-letter, from someone who represents over 25K website members on which there are over 1 million postings, would be more effective.  A e-mail that expresses concerns over what has been written of her in the major papers, and seeks clarification of her gun ownership and hunting positions and intent, with the focus of resolving so much conjecture and concern especially for her constituent members, is the best way to find out what she has to say for herself.  Nobody is able to say with any affinity, one way or the other, what she will be like when it comes time to vote, until she does.

And lets not forget that she already has the job.  She didn't have to campaign for it like, ya know, caroline was, ummmm, tryin' to do and she didn't demand the job like carolyn mccarthy did.  Paterson picked her so he could gain her upstate rural support and that includes by design the hunting and gun ownership faction - the democraps already have the inner cities but paterson needs rural upstate support to successfully vie against cuomo in 2010.  Paterson does not want to be known to history as the 'accidental governor' - he wants a full, elected term for himself and he needs the upstate bloc to buffer his chances against cuomo's nyc support.  cuomo can hype gun control all he wants but with Gillibrand in his upstate corner paterson can point to successful differences within his own state to refute anything cuomo wants to hype up.

OK, I have posts to modify.  Mikey.

I have a suspicion that the liberal scum may have seen her pro gun vote as less effective in the Senate than in the house. I think they will move her to the senate and then appoint an anti to her House seat. Now come next election they may figure she has very little chance of winning her senate seat back or even winning the primary for the whole state. Liberal scum has no problem sacrificing their own, heck killing a baby is just a choice to them. The way our country has gotten into the trouble we are in is by compromising with the liberal scum, compromising with wrong, is wrong. The liberal scum has absolutely no morals or ethics.

Bill:  "The Second Amendment Ain't about HUNTING."  No Schmidt.  But have ya noticed that nobody has asked her about the 2nd Amendment, just her positions on hunting and gun ownership.

billy - I think paterson selected her because he wanted a pro-gun/hunting upstate woman to help him break away from the stranglehold nyc has on nys.  There isn't any way carolyn mccarthy will be able to wrest that seat from her and shumer finally got what he want - to be the best known senator from ny; otherwise his efforts to swing her to a anti-gun stance have not worked.

And ya know guys - until someone asks her directly it will be conjecture forever.
