handgun optics
« on: January 23, 2009, 03:22:38 PM »
I have a 14" TC contender in 30-30. I am looking for a good scope to put on it for deer hunting, shots probably not more than 150 yds. Any thoughts without breaking the bank?

Bushnell Trophy 2X6X32.  The hold up great to recoil and a very good as far as clarity.

Leupold 2.5 x 8 is the best hunting handgun scope IMO.  You can find these used under $300 and they are worth every penny.  You will never regret buying one.  Good luck.

I have a Leupold 2.5X8 on my 460 Mag, but he is looking for a scope that is not that expensive. But there is nothing wrong with a Bushnell 2 X 6 either. I had one on my 460 and 500 Mag for over 5 years, and now it sits back on a 500 Mag that my buddy has.

Also where can I find a Leupold 2.5 X8 EER used for under $300.  ;D

I have used both a Leupold 4X and a Bushnell 3200 2-6X on my 14" T/C .30-30 with complete satisfaction. The less expensive Bushnell Trophy 2-6X should also be quite satisfactory, but I have not used one. Many friends have been satisfied with them on various calibers.
In truth, no more than 4X is really necessary on a .30-30, and many used Leupold 4X's in good condition can be found at attractive prices.

Redhawk1,

I have never had or used one of the bushnell handgun scopes before so I just listen to what others have to say on them.  Didn't know the dollar amount that would break the bank when I made the post.  I just look for value.  I saw a used silver leupold 2.5 x 8 at the local gun shop Saturday for $275+tax.  Other gun shop had them used for $340+ tax.  I have always had good luck with Leupolds.  Bought my first one when I was 16.  That was a long time ago!  Still have it, still use it, and still like it ;)  This is a great website and there are many people here that know so much more than I do!  I love to listen to what they have to say and hopefully learn something everyday.  Have a great day!

The Bushnell Trophy 2-6x32 should do the trick...But, remember if you purchase a used Leupold 2x, 4x, or 2.5-8x32 pistol scope, it would be covered under their lifetime warranty no matter who owned it before you...Just a little food for thought.

If it were me, I would go for the Bushnell and never look back.  They can be found for $163.78 at GBO Sponsor Midsouth Shooters Supply.

The same is true for used Burris scopes. I have purchased several used Burris' and never had a problem with them, but its good to know they will stand behind their product.

Actually, I had a Bushnell on a 460 S&W Mag. & it broke.  Bushnell wouldn't stand behind their warranty even though I had bought it new.

I now go with T/C or Leuopld handgun scopes because both of those companies stand behind their products.

I had the same problem with Bushnell not standing behind their product.
I used to be a retailer and sold Bushnell scopes until I got a bad one.  it came with a cracked lens,  Bushnell refused to acknowledge they sent anything out that was broken,  it was the last time I dealt with them or recommended them.

I presently have  Bushnell ,Leo , Burris , and a Weaver on some of my handguns....If-in your buget is tight , ya might try the Weaver , I had their 2X on a 44 Mag , it was as clear as the higher priced scopes.  Also I have to agree with Redhawk 1 , My Bushnell has held up fine , it was on my 460 Encore , it held together fine.....2-6X for under 200 bucks, and its fairly clear.  No doubt the Leopold and Burris are probably better scopes....not sure they're that much better though.  Good Luck

Don't get me started!  I had the same problem with Bushnell...  >:(  Happens every time I stray from Leupold...  :-[

This is a very good point. Bushnell apparently has a corporate policy to deliberately screw every customer who attempts to use the Warranty. I already had a half dozen or more 2-6X 3200's in service when I discovered this. I've never (yet) had any trouble with those scopes, however. My problem was with binoculars.

I used to use a Bushnell 3200 2-6x on a TC Contender.  That scope did duty on two different barrels: a 7/30 Waters and a .30 Herrett.  It took a lot of pounding and never had a problem.  Usually, I just kept the scope on 4x, and if I get another handgun scope I'll look for a fixed power.

As for Bushnell's warranty, my experience was positive.  My spotting scope got dropped and when I sent it to Bushnell for repair, they replaced it at no charge.  That was unexpected and very appreciated.

:o  What!  I did the same thing.  Dropped the spotting scope that is.  When I sent it back I had to include a check for return shipping; $20.00 I think.  When they called me, or I called them, can't remember, the estmate to fix the scope was more then I paid for it!  I told them that and they did everything but call me a liar.   >:(

Oh well, live and learn...  :)

I agree, there must have been a shift inBushnells policy ~ no doubt driven by the current economic climate.

In the past, I'd send a scope in to have it resealed/cleaned and ask to upgrade w/BDC and they'd do it w/o extra charge. Those were the days ~ sadly they're gone. Everyone is trying (in the short term at least) to stay solvent ~ but it'll catch up w/them in the long run.

I've been screwed and tatooed so many times by Detroit that I find no sympathy for them in their current predicament ~ particular the lot people.

Odoh,
There may indeed have been a shift in policy but it wasn't driven by the current economic climate. My poor experience came when the economy was in full rapid-growth mode.

I have a 35 Rem that wears a leupold 4x and i have shot deer at 150 yds with it. I have a 7mm-08 with a leupold 2x8 and really never found the need to use more than 4x. I have a burris on a 45/70 and didn't care for the cross hairs and sent it back to have the factory put in a black dot at a 50 dollar charge. I didn't shoot that gun for about a year due to health issues and when I actually mounted it ,The scope was all but useless. The dot isn't large enough and I can't pick it up in the woods. I called them and wanted a larger dot but now they say they don't do it anymore. That stinks. One of my favorite scopes is a TC electra dot in 3 x. They don't make it anymore and I tell ya that thing gave me beautiful contrast on deer to 100 yds mounted on a 44 mag. I tried to purchase more of them but the factory says they lost all inventory in that fire they had years ago. The scope was covered by a lifetime warranty and they had to repair it a few times but that scope is my favorite with the black dot and capability of lighted reticles if needed. If anybody knows where I can find one of those 3x electra dots let me know.

I have a 7x30 waters, a 44 mag, a 223, a 22 and a few others. I have used tasco 4x- TC verable, Burris ver. and found that just keeping every thing at 4x works fine. I spend the extra for a veriable any more.
