Small base die...
« on: January 24, 2009, 06:21:10 AM »
I have a Rem. 7600 in .257 Roberts. Is there a die manufacturer that makes a small base die for this caliber?  I`m not sure if a regular full length die would resize the cases small enough?  Thanks...

Every  gun is dif but most of the time you will be ok,I have reloaded for rem pumps in 35 whelen, 270win, 30-06 with normal dies with no problems.
the biggest thing i found with small base dies is i have needed them to resize brass from on gun
to fit another = by this i mean if your chamber is big on x gun and i use your brass in my normal or tight chamber,i have had to use the sb dies but chances are you will be fine reloading brass you fired in that gun.

You can contact RCBS about a custom die.

Ron, are you actually having problems with your .257 chambering rounds? The reason I ask is I had a 760 30-06 and now a 7600 7-08 and use regular FL dies and have not had a problem with my reloads. I will add I now have a .45acp carbide die I have had the top of the die bored out and run my .243, 7-08, and 30-06 cases through to squeeze the case in the web area. >308 length cases will run through a .45acp die with the decapping rod removed. Cheaper than a small base die and can be used on any 30-06 or .308 based brass. BTW, the cases that gets the most from running it through my .45acp die is my 30-06 brass fired in my M70.

I plan to get a die for my 7600 and have read where you need a small base Die. I bought some Brass from a member here and have a box of empties that was fired in this gun. Think I will take a chance and get the full length RCBS. Now, to decide on a bullet!!!

I have been loading for a M760 in 270 Win. for about fifty years with a standard die w/o a problem.  My brother loads for M760 in .300 Savage and he uses a standard die

Get some new, unfired cases and mike them just ahead of the extrator groove so you can see what a factory-new case measures.  Then get a 7/8" x 14 socket-head, cap screw and have a machinist bore an appropriately-sized hole through it (say .467" or .468") and you can use it for any case that uses a standard .30/06 case head.  I had a machinist friend, who was also a handloader, do this for me about 25 years ago and it has worked great ever since.  This will re-size any "swell" just ahead of the extractor groove but not do anything to the neck or shoulder, which could alter headspace.  Then you can run them through your regular resizing die and proceed as you normally do.

I also have RCBS .30/06 small-base dies, that I bought for my Dad's 760 pump years ago, and they worked well for reloading for his pump and I have used them to load my bolt action rifles as well.

I've also used RCBS standard .280 Remington dies (not small-base) to load for a 7600 pump in .280 Remington and I've not had any problems.
